Okay, this is just quick because I need to get to bed and I have a SHIT-tonne of stuff to do tomorrow but you guys, YOU GUYS-- WE ARE GOING TO L'ANSE AUX MEADOWS. :DDDDDDD
Some of you know we're into Vikings; one or two of you know how deeply. We're Heathens; we were REALLY into the SCA and had a full, period Viking-encampment, down to reproductions we'd made of chests and the bed from the Gokstad ship (except for the kitchen tent, which had a double-sink, and the shower tent, which had a full heated shower, because we're Heathens, not barbarians, lol); we helped build a half-scale reproduction of the Gokstad longship (the Oseborg is the more beautiful, with an amazing prow, but she's a pleasure yacht, not a proper sea=worthy vessel, and she needs an absolutely flat sea with no side-wind or she'll turn turtle, which is why the Gokstad is more popular for repros--but oh, those lines)--and then we got married on her. Sweet. And if we had had only a little bit more money our property in 100 Mile would already have a Norse meadhall on it.
We are really, really into the Norse.
And I have wanted to go to L'Anse aux Meadows (the first documented European settlement in the New World, and the only documented Viking settlement) for at least twenty years now, and never, ever thought I would be able to, short of winning the lottery (which is highly unlikely as I pretty much never buy tickets) because I never thought we'd ever be able to afford the trip from BC.
And now we're RIGHT HERE. Okay, like fourteen hours of driving plus a seven-plus-hour ferry ride away, but relatively speaking? From a west-coaster's perspective? We are. Right. Here.
So next Monday we're hopping a ferry and heading over for like a WEEK. :DDDDDD
:DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So I won't have a lot of time to post about it leading up to it but I'm sure I will tell you ALL about it afterwards. Meanwhile, if there's anything you want me to check out for you while we're there (I'm researching hearths and smoke holes! And trying a warp-weighted loom!! :D) let me know in the comments here, 'kay?
OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGSQUEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! This is literally a dream come true, you guys. You have NO idea how ridiculously excited I am about this.
To bed! :D
