Hooray!

Today, Mike graduates from Basic Training and becomes a full-fledged member of the Royal Canadian Air Force! Congratulations, Mike! Way to go!!

We couldn't be there, of course, because the cost to travel from BC to Quebec by train or airplane is ridiculous. Not even gonna contemplate doing it by bus; even if it wasn't ridiculously expensive too, I've got two small kids. I wouldn't wish a cross-country bus trip on my worst enemy, let alone one accompanied by two small kids. Sheesh. By train is far more civilized, and they can get up and walk around. And of course by air is much faster. But by bus? Brrrr.

So we aren't there in person (which is too bad), but I'm sure there will be pics. So I thought I'd send him an ecard, at least. And sure, free graduation ecards are all over the place. So hey, I thought, let's look for a graduating Basic card. Why not.

Oh look there's lots. Oh no wait, they've all got American flags or eagles all over them. Even if they don't they're all in US uniforms, so kind of not really appropriate.

Young kid: "Gee, Daddy! Congratulations on graduating Basic training and heading into the USAF! Look, we found you a card!"

Card: *Congratulations on joining the Royal Air Force! Her Majesty is very proud of you, as are we all."

Yeeeaaah. Doesn't quite work, does it? Oh well, no biggie. Let's just go look for a Canadian version OH LOOK THERE'S NOTHING. ><

Seriously, Canada! Get your ass in gear and please acknowledge that we actually do have an army and that being part of it is something to be proud of? Don't get me wrong, I think the Highway of Heroes is fantastic, and I love that it is a grass-roots thing and not something that some politician decided to proclaim while everyone else just rolled their eyes and went about their business.

But Jesus Crackers, tonnes of people go into the Canadian Forces. Tonnes of them graduate. Is it really that hard to have an ecard for that? Look, the Americans have entire websites devoted to them! But I've got to choose between a card for foreign graduates of a different country's military entirely, or generic fireworks?

*Sigh* Fireworks it is, then!

Congratulations, Mike!
