More Steampunky Costumy Goodness

So, yeah, two updates, I guess. First of all, I FINALLY (!!!!!) got my watch in from Steampunk Threads (remind me to give you all that saga sometime; it's bloody insane), and as it's actually a pocket watch on a necklace chain instead of on a watch fob, and as I haven't yet replaced the chain, I've been wearing it as a necklace (and stuffing it ( Read more... )

I know JUST the kind of jodhpurs; I myself damned near went nuts trying to find a pair in my size before giving up and doing a skirt instead.

Hmm. I agree, "God is in the details," as a college set design teacher was wont to say. Some thoughts off the top of my head:

-How about a neckerchief, fastened with a Steamy brass pin? Maybe something like this or this (I figure something with wings would be appropriate).

Might also be cool to add some pouches for all your neat bits off your belt; I can totally see one of the small collapsing telescopes hanging there. I'm going to be doing a vest with all sorts of buckles on it with pockets for my watch and other cool bits. Of course, I just realized last night that with my watch in my pocket, no one's gonna see it, are they? XD I will probably have to decorate the pockets themselves with things. I'm kind of considering putting little plastic windows in them now, so you can see what neat stuff I've got lol. But that may have been the exhaustion speaking, lol.

-For some awesome accessories, how about this (SO gonna grab one myself when I have the chance!!), or some of the other awesome stuff they have over at the Gentleman's Emporium? ~Drooooool~

Steampunk Threads is where I got my pocket watch. They have a few other neat pieces too but I think this is my fave piece there.

So far as goggles go, the my-size pair I have that Karl and I sorta fight over was simply an old Bakelite set of welding goggles. I painted them gold and copper), replaced the super-dark green glass lenses with some custom-cut brown-tinted ones from my local glass supply shop (for a grand total of 80 cents for both the tinted and a clear set of plastic lenses), and went down to my local shoe repair store (a good supply of raw leather scraps and buckles) and had her cut a strap for it to replace the ugly old stretched black elastic one. After providing a brass buckle, too, and riveting the buckle to the strap and the strap to the goggles, I think I was down about $10. Paid $2 for the goggles themselves at a second-hand store.

The end result, while not particularly elaborate, does have a vintage feel and passes quite well, I think, for a first set of Steampunk goggles. I've plans for a more elaborate set (for Karl and for me), but now that I've got something it can wait until I have the time to do ridiculously fiddly dishing bits with brass.
