Fun times at the E.R.!!!

We had Slater's first visit tot he ER last night. It only took 3 1/2yrs (which I am definately NOT complaining about, but rather an actually quite grateful for)!!

This wknd started off well enough.

We went out to Milwaukee to hang w/Steve's sis, and not only was it totally gorgeous out but they have a HUGE backyard (newly remodeled too, so there's lot's more fun comfy stuff to hang out on).We had a nice bbq out there and Slater, his cousin Ethan, and his cousins best friend proceeded to play in it nonstop.
(kind OT but still fairly amusing/annoying/etc.....Ethan and his buddy are 6yrs old and two of the most cliqueish kiddos I've ever met.So much so his parents didn't want them in the same class for that very reason. For a while there they were being so catty torwards Slater, you know whispering and laughing/not sharing/and all that jazz, that they reminded me of these two very prissy and high maintence girls I used to babysit!:0!It also got to the point where all kids were outta sight for a few moments and Steve went to check in and saw they both trying to pin Slater to the ground, and he had to lay the smack down!Granted Slater was holding his own in the situation but this is his COUSIN, who he looks up to, acting like this!!Blech.Anyhow between that incident and both of us moms giving the older kiddos *the look* periodically, the boys were decent enough thereafter.:/)

Well we also noticed both Slater and his cousin were had noses that were a bit runny but we thought nothing of it (exept for the fact that they both have mild allergies).

Get home last night and Slater's breathing starts getting more and more labored. He's kinda wheezing, but otherwise seems alert and okay.I know nothing about asthma, that is on Steve's end of the family, so his dad is the one keeping an eye on him and eventually....around 11pm... he get's worried enough and makes the call to head to the ER.
Thank the gods it was a fairly lax night there, and we are seen immediately. So we go straight back, they then take his vitals and whatnot.
And at this point Slater is hella groggy, but still fairly compliant, that is until we relocate from the processing center to an actual room of our own where upon seeing all the gadgets and whatnot he proceeds to freak out!Poor kid.
His dad tells him he has to put a mask on and that it will be a "piece of cake", and in the cutest, saddest little voice he replies "no want a piece of cake, dada!!", and all the while during this his rebuttals to stuff he didn't want to do was "no, no thank you!!".Which had all the employees in the general vicinity both laughing and 'awwwww'ing.;p
So he cuddled w/his dada in the bed and we finally put the oxygen mask on him to help clear things up a bit.Eventually he calms down, and gets some rest in Steve's lap.The doctors come back in, check him out and order an Xray, even though he is all cleared up, just as 'procedure'.
Went to the xray room, dada put his vest on and helped set Slater up.He was well behaved and sat surprisingly still for 2 pictures (saying "Cheese!!" during each shot). On a side note, nothing is more hella surreal than seeing the insides of your kiddo while looking at him sitting in right in front of you!It was just, weird.
Went back to our room, and got ready to go home. It's around 2am and we were all totally beat and ready to hit the hay.The doc offered us another oxygen treatment 'for the road' but A.he didn't really need it and B.there is no telling how ungodly exspensive it would be on our totally lame ins. plan.So she just gave us a prescription for a 'toddler inhaler' and her number, and then we went on our merry, tired way.
We get home, pass out right upon hitting the bed and about an hour later Slater wakes up in a tizzy. His breathing is labored again, so I get up and walk up to out local Walgreens (about 5m away, and given the parking in our neighborhood...esp. at 4ish am, still easier to do than take the car) and fill out Slaters script.
Btw...you know you have severely craptacular ins. coverage when the pharmicist asks what my copay is and does our plan really cover so LITTLE of the med costs???Meh.
So yeah, get home, kiddo is totally out and sleeping soundly....his breathing being not *normal* but not *bad* either. So we just let him sleep...and sleep...and Slater and I do not get up this morning until 10am (Steve slept in until 9ish only because he still had to get up for work, which is where he is at now, totally exhausted.poor guy).
The kiddo seem to be doing much better, just a few raspy coughs here and there if you get him too worked up.But we are still going to get him in to his ped. for a follow up.

So yeah, between the out of town wknd, ER fiasco, the $85 inhaler, and belated ins. payment my b-day budget is pretty much shot!!:p.Doh.
At least for any expensive type gifts (like the stand up mixer, and bed set, I was eyeballing). But then again it's really want's and not needs on that list, and then there is always X-mas!!

Besides, methinks a stable budget (aka everything paid up in time) and my families health is always going to be a much better present than something wrapped up and given on a certain date!?!Right.;)
(well that and if I'm really jonzing for gifts all that damn bad Mothers Day is around the corner as well *schnicker*)

grateful, slater
