Why They Can Never Be
--

They fall together on the night before her wedding because his divorce is almost final and she’s not quite married yet, so they lie and say it doesn’t count.

She shows up on his doorstep late in the evening, pretending she doesn’t know why she came and he opens the door pretending he wasn’t expecting her to be there. And even though they know how the night will end, they pretend they’re not stalling as they have a drink and exchange small talk that should be awkward (but isn’t).

Her ring comes off even before her shoes, sliding across the glossy finish of the nightstand. His ring has been in the nightstand drawer for weeks.

She wakes up before him the next morning, (not really) surprised that it feels completely and utterly normal to be lying naked in Jack Rudolph’s bed, legs tangled with his under the cotton sheets. Careful not to jostle him, she slides slowly out of his grasp, and as the cold air hits her back, she wishes (just for a moment) that she didn’t have to leave.

He wakes up just as she’s putting her heels back on. She’s perched on the edge of the bed, not facing him, but by the way her shoulders stiffen he can tell she knows he’s watching her.

Once the straps of her shoes are secure, she stands, looking back at him over her shoulder. They don’t need words; she can see the you don’t have to go just yet in his eyes. She blinks once, twice, three times before turning away and walking out of the bedroom.

She didn’t expect him to stop her, and when his (strong) hand grabs at her wrist just as she’s reaching for the front door, she gasps (forcing him to suppress a moan as the sound leaves her lips).

He still doesn’t say anything, sliding her forgotten engagement ring onto her left hand with a knowing smirk. She sighs, telling herself she’s not disappointed as she rises onto her tiptoes to kiss him on the cheek.

And he watches her go, her skirt swaying a little in the breeze and the early morning sunlight glinting off of her diamond ring.

(He shuts the door when the glare becomes too much to bear: a reminder of why they can never be.)
