I'm kind of really domestic and a loner...How very NOT me...That's going to change by next week, I promise you!
So this is what I've been striving for for the passed year or so! This is my life in Paris. I might have a job. Hopefully I get it. If I do, I'll post about what it is. I made some friends and hope to make some more. I can't wait to start doing language exchange with some people too. You spend some time together and speak in your language, and then in their language.
Today I am going to head down to the health food store to buy some tofu and some soy milk. That kind of stuff isn't the easiest to find at just any old grocery store. You can find soy milk, but tofu is a lot harder. I have to go to the 'health food store' called Naturalia. We're also having dessert with the four American broads across the hall tonight. I made rice pudding, will make cookies and we'll have port. That's pretty good. no?
This is the rice pudding recipe. It's delicious!
4 cups whole milk/or soy if you're vegan
1 tsp vanilla extract
dash of cinnamon
pinch of salt
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup rice
3 tbsp butter/or margarine
- Warm the milk at a low heat and add the vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
- Bring 4 cups of water to a boil and add the rice. Cook for 2 minutes and then strain.
- Bring the milk to a boil and add the rice.
- Cover and simmer for 30-40 minutes at a very low heat.
- Stir in butter.
- Cool and serve, or serve hot.
Don't leave the pot unattended and do other things for the 30 minutes. It might boil over or the milk might burn. You need to watch it to make sure the heat isn't too high.
Peanut Butter Cookies - The easiest things on the planet!
1 cup sugar
1 egg/or 1 egg replacement
1 cup peanut butter
(you can add chocolate chips or whatever else you want for extra 'flair')
- Preheat oven to 400°F.
- Combine ingredients and mix well.
- Roll into 1 inch balls.
- Place on ungreased an cookie pan. You can press them with the back of a fork here to make the criss cross marks if you absolutely need to be fancy.
- Bake for 8 to 10 minutes.
The port is Vasco's Porto. It's from Portugal. i'm not really a fan of Port, but it's a desserty kind of thing, so it's fitting. Whenever I think of Port, I think of Amélie, visiting the landlord whose husband disappeared in the war and offers her port. Port sounds better in French. "Porto."
I walked for a few hours today and a couple of those were through Père Lachaise (Line 2 or 3 at Père Lachaise). I should have brought my camera. On the way there I bought dark brown shoe cream for my loafers. Despite not knowing some of the terms he was using, the shoe repair guy told me that I spoke French well. That's always a confidence boost. So I polished my shoes for a bit while I was in the cemetery.
I swear though, the more I walk through this city, the more I will get carbon monoxide poisoning. There are always cars and scooters putting around and smokeifying the streets. Being in the cemetery was a nice breath of fresh air. I guess I should just take up smoking. What? Everybody in France does. ;)
