Yes, you're absolutely correct. I should really have clarified. I was thinking of this episode, because Lex's NEED to find the stones seemed to have grown considerably from previous episodes. He's been obsessed for quite some time (Lex has quite the exceptional obsessive personality), but in "Commencement" it appeared as if he had gone off the deep end, especially in his interactions with Chloe (dragging her rather violently off to the caves with him) and Lana (particularly the conversation by the helicopter. Lex's "evil" subtext has gotten less and less veiled throughout the run of the show (especially this season), but he basically (despite protestations to the contrary with Lana) threw away all pretense of friendship/respect/civil interaction in his quest for the stones during "Commencement." I think his rather blatant nefarious behavior, specifically those acts of active aggression (with barely a pretense of subtlety) towards Chloe and Lana, came as somewhat of a shock to me. I know they've been building towards it, but it felt like it escalated incredibly quickly over these past few episodes, and, as I've said before, particularly in "Commencement." That's why his comment to Lionel about obsession struck me as funny, I believe upon my second viewing of the episode (having seen it before probably contributed greatly to my reaction, as I was aware of Lex's later actions).
As for Lionel, I agree with everything you say above, absolutely. Overall, of course, he is by far the more obsessed of the two Luthors. True, beyond turning Lex on to the quest in the first place, Lionel is always at least a step ahead of Lex in the search. Lionel referring to Lana as 'the Chosen One' was very interesting. Good call.
And yes, Lex really is pretty much all about those damn caves, huh? It always comes back to Clark for him, doesn't it (even when he not aware of it consciously)? Clearly Lionel knows more about Clark's involvement, as well, if his timely 'rescue' of Lex from Jason during "Forever" is any indication. He obviously didn't want Lex to hear whatever Jason was about to reveal.
Anyway, I need to sleep now. I apologize if any of this doesn't make sense due to my extreme need for sleep and resulting loss of cognitive ability. Thank you for pointing out my oversight, seriously. I appreciate the opportunity to clarify (I hope) my point. :)
Honestly, the sheer number of people who are (or were) obsessed with those stones is hysterical!
