My players impressed the heck out of me tonight. They took a throw-away flavor text room -- a subterranean garden shrine dedicated to Bahamut but long since desecrated and destroyed -- and spent roughly 45 minutes of effort restoring it, culling the taint from the diseased plants within, and consecrating it again.

I allowed an impromptu skill challenge to bless the garden's fountain and restore it to functionality, and ultimately awarded the group experience points for a minor quest and gave the character who took the "lead" in the effort a level 3 divine boon.

The best part was that the players didn't expect any sort of reward for this behavior. They took a break in their adventure simply because it was the right thing to do. We don't see that incredibly often in my group, even from the paladins and clerics. I was super-impressed!
