There Is No Spoon. Well, Actually There Were Two...

I read today that Keanu Reeves and the Wachowski Brothers are contemplating going back to make another Matrix movie, maybe even two. They're talking to people like James Cameron about re-inventing special effects again yada yada yada.

This got me thinking. I love the first Matrix movie. It was a cool story with amazing special effects. The second two? Not so much. I mean, I really didn't like them. I have a hard time thinking about the Matrix without thinking about them, and because of that, I can't even remember when the last time I watched the Matrix was.

This is the potential problems with sequels, right? They cheapen the original experience.

But if the experience has been so thoroughly cheapened, as it was with the Matrix, is there any kind of shot with redemption? I mean, if the Wachowski Bros. and Keanu ended up making a movie that was even better than the first Matrix, would that redeem the franchise? Is it better to just drop the series after it's fallen, or better to take another shot?
Update: Mssr. rufusthered points out that in fact, the Matrix sequels is a hoax. Thanks, sir! (And thanksalot, AICN. Grrrrrr.)

That said, I still think the question of whether or not attempting to redeem fallen franchises, etc. is an interesting discussion!
