Uncle Jim likes to say every character in the story thinks they're the King on the chessboard. Even the pawns.
What surprised me today was when I wrote one passage, really one exchange between two characters, a few short sentences of dialogue -- and all of a sudden I realize that the character I thought of as the pawn turns out to be the king.
God, I love it when my story surprises me, when characters suddenly jump out and say or do unexpected things that make so much sense. I always think the story I'm working on is the best I've ever written. This one, though, if I can pull it off really could be. It's rocking me right now and I'm freaking loving it.
I feel like I'm Charlie Pace, trapped at the bottom of the ocean in the Looking Glass and getting slapped around. There's blood on my lips but I'm laughing in the face of it all, taunting those bitches, becase I know I know how it's going to end.
At least until the next surprise.
I'm pretty sure it's going to eventually become part of a book called Starkiller. But right now, it's a short story called "Life-Debt."
