After recieving
less than stellar news earlier, Krycek made his calls and waited. Thankfully, people showed up, which was more of a relief than he'd like to admit.
When everyone had gathered in his mostly empty room, Krycek got their attention with a tap of a coffee mug against the top of his desk. "Guys? I really appreciate you coming here for this," he said to start off, looking grim. "Now we just need to figure out who's doing what."
Parker looked around, and said, "How many groups do we have here? Those going, and those staying to research? Anything else?"
"How many of us are researching, anyway?" Rory asked quietly, her arms crossed around herself. She glanced over at Mac and asked, "Anyone but the book nerd and the techno whiz? 'Cause I think we can handle it if you want to get a head start on the going part. The sooner we find him and fix this, the better."
Mac nodded her agreement. "So long as we know what we're looking for," she said. "With any luck, between us we'll dig up something of use."
Alanna handed Faithful off to Rory. "He's useful once you get past all the snark."
Faithful glared. "Hey!"
Rory raised a brow but took the cat. "And I promise Vladdie'll stay out of things," she assured him.
"Good, because otherwise he's loosing a nose." Faithful said and looked innocently up at Rory.
D crossed her arms and leaned against the back of the sofa and gave a half-hearted, half grin in Faithful's general direction. No one had died of snark yet.
A Help-Find-Jake-Central group meeting was the last place she ever expected to find herself, but Alex had asked and here she was. "So, what's the game plan?"
"So far, all we know is Jake's missing while on an assignment for his dad," Krycek said, leaning against his desk. "For those of you who don't know, Jake's dad runs a courier service - their employees make deliveries and transport things for clients, and the name of the game is 'discretion'.
"The problem is, aside from Jake having disappeared off the face of the earth, Jake's dad thinks it's an inside job." The look on his face was deceptively bland, belying how surprised he'd been at recieving a call from Jacob Sr, much less a call for help. "Which is why he called me. We've got to find him before something worse happens to him - assuming it hasn't already.
"Jake's last position was in Amsterdam. From here, we can get access to the Infonet computer systems - for the researching crew - and the rest of us will be in the field. Any questions so far?"
Alanna tenatively raised her hand. "What's Amsterdam?"
"The capital of the Netherlands," he said, then paused. "Which is in Europe, across the ocean."
"Is there any reason he'd go on one of these missions and have to lay low? People he knew were after him?"
"It's possible, but Mr Gavin doesn't seem to think so," Krycek said. "And I don't think he'd call me unless he was pretty damn sure Jake was missing."
D snorted softly and said way under her breath, "no shit."
She had Daddy-Gavin Issues.
Parker raised an eyebrow at D, but decided not to ask about that reaction just yet. "So we know where, and when he disappeared. Do we know who? You said an inside job-- is this a large pool of people we're dealing with, or do we a limited number of suspects?"
"It has to be one of the employees with high level security access," Krycek said. "So a somewhat limited pool. Possibly another courier."
"How much do we know about those particular employees or couriers?" D asked, arms still crossed. Better to know as much as possible about what's a head than not ask.
"Right now, not much," Krycek admitted. "All we know for sure is we don't know who we can trust, so we can't trust any of them."
"Then I'm hoping we can all go armed, one way or another? I don't like the idea that whoever it is can get the drop on us, and the best we can do is call for help," Parker said. "When do we leave?"
"We'll definitely go armed when we can. I have no idea if whoever has Jake would be cautious when shooting up a bunch of high school students, but I'd guess they wouldn't be too concerned," he said. "We'll be leaving tomorrow, so you've got time to decide if you want to drop out."
"I'm in," Kawalsky said. "If it was an inside job, we should get intel on the other couriers' recent assignments and known contacts. They'd need to hide Jake somewhere and it's more likely that they'd use resources they already had."
Krycek nodded agreement. "I'll make sure Mr Gavin gets that to us," he said. "Anyone else?"
Rory shook her head, looking slightly more ill than she had at the start of the meeting. "We'll get cracking on research while you guys are out, I guess. Maybe start on it on our own tonight, meet up tomorrow."
"You guys will have a supposedly unobstructed connection to InfoNet," Krycek said. "Do whatever you need to and we'll stay in touch as much as possible by cell."
Krycek looked at everyone else. "That's all I've got for now. Those of you on the rescue team, we'll be met by a courier on the causeway at noon sharp. Come armed, but we'll be travelling light. Sleep well and hopefully I'll see you tomorrow."
