Your computer puzzle has piqued my curiosity. What kind of system are you running? What is your operating system, and have you been doing anything unusual in the past couple days? Is there a large website in the cache of your internet browser? Did someone send you a large attachment in an email? Have you been running some kind of mathematical analysis program in the background (Folding@Home, etc)? Have you recently installed or run some software that appears to be poorly/amateurly written? You might search for all the files that were created/modified in the past couple days, and see what that turns up (it might be too long a list to do anything useful, but it's worth a shot).

Good luck with this!

I'm on an iBook running OS X (Tiger). I recently downloaded a few things: Smultron, Gizmo, and a plugin for Adium that interfaces with Gizmo. None of them are very big, though--a few MB altogether. Also downloaded updates for Photoshop--that's about a half a gig. Nothing extraordinary in email--I just emptied the "Deleted" folder. Also emptied Firefox's cache.

When you go to the hard drive, there's a list of folders:

Applications -- 2.9 GB
Applications (Mac OS 9) -- 107 MB
Developer -- 1.08 GB
Library -- 13.89 GB
sw -- 129.8 MB
System -- 2.07 GB
System Folder -- 196.7 MB
Users -- 10.61 GB

(there's a couple others, but they're tiny)

That adds up to about 31 GB. The computer says that I have 4.72 GB available. That means about 4.3 GB has just--gone missing. That's better than my previous calculation, but still rather troublesome...

I just don't get how there can apparently be several gigs of stuff that is on my computer--yet not on my hard drive.

Huh. That's bizarre. I don't know enough about Macs to help you out. Good luck!
