Traveling to the hot Egyptian sands, we find the Great Pyramid of Giza.No one knows exactly when this wonderful structure was built. The very shape of the pyramid is a pyramid. This structure is a little over 500 feet tall. The pharoh that ordered it to be built's ashes are in this huge structure. One of the most amazing facts about this structure is that the Egyptians built it using stone, ivory, gold, rope, and strength.
Heading in the direction of Babylon, we'll attempt to find the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. This chance is scarce, since no one knows if it even exists. We do know that supposedly it was built in 605-562 BCE. No one knows what it looks like. Following various legends/scientific theory, we found out it was built at the authority of King Nebuchadnezzar II, supposedly because his new wife, Queen Amytis, was unhappy with his desert palace.
Going to Greece we'll see the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, in Halicarnassus, built at 175 feet tall in 4 BCE. It has pictures and sculptures all around it. The only reason it was built was to house the body of King Mausolos, after which it was named.
In Ephesus, Greece, we'll be seeing the great Temple of Artemis, or Kyebele, Goddess of fertility Built in 850 BCE, the temple was 150' tall and was surrounded by columns. It was designed by the Turks and took minor visual differences when the Greeks rebuilt it. It was built to honor the goddess Artemis (or Kyebele).
In Athens, Greece is the great Temple of Zeus. It was built somewhere around 466-456 BCE. Predictably it is a large statue of Zeus in a large temple.”Zeus” held a Staff in one hand and his guiding angel, Nike, in the other. He is made of Ivory and gold, and is dressed in different variations of silk. It sits 23 feet tall. The Greeks built it to honor the god Zeus, the patron deity of the Greek pantheon.
In Rhodes, an island off the coast of Greece, is the great Collossus, a giant 106 foot tall statue. It began construction in 292 BCE and was finished in 304 BCE. It was at it's full completion for 60 years, when it it collapsed in an earthquake. It was constructed in celebration of surviving a long determined siege. The weapons and armor of the retreating forces was smelted down and turned into the Collossus. It was built by the Rhodes people and was designed by a man named Chares.
Finally going across the Mediterranean Sea, we sail to the harbors of the great city Alexandria, and steer clear of a bunch of huge rocks, guided by the Pharos Lighthouse, the largest lighthouse in the history of the world. Starting construction at 299 BCE, it took 20 years to build. Lucky for you and me that it finished construction before we came here, or we would be like all those other ships, smashed on the rocks. The 400' tall structure was built by Ptolemy (Toel-um-EE) Soter's people. It was ordered to be built on the basis that ships wouldn't crash on the rocks.
