Sony Can Suck My Ass.

So Microsoft just released a patch for the 360 this week that displays the coveted 1080p resolution that Sony has been raving about for the past x amount of months. Basically, if you haven't been keeping up with the waves and waves of bullshit spewing forth from every direction recently the xbox 360 could not display 1080p resolution and could only output the lowly 1080i and 720p resolutions (yea I know at this point half of you have gone somewhere else in boredom, but for those of you still with me..) so they released a patch that emulates 1080p for competitions sake. Whoopty do.

I decided, hey I have a TV capable of 1080p and a 360, I must download this patch and closely inspect for any visual differences! So I come home, download the patch and let it reboot my system and with glee I scroll to the system settings and throw on that 1080p switch... and my TV goes bat-fucking insane. Sure 10 seconds later it switches back to 1080i and I sit here thinking... what the hell is going on? So I try some other things, I plug the 360 through my receiver and connect to the TV via the HDMI port.. the TV displays black now when I switch it to 1080p. I call a friend who has the same TV as I have and a 360, he gets the same problem. So now I'm looking at whether the TV is the problem or the xbox..

So I grab the owner's manual and start flipping through, I notice component only lists up to 1080i.. perhaps Sony doesn't allow 1080p inputs into their TV without an HDMI connection.. Maybe connection through component and trying to switch to HDMI with my reciever isn't enough? I investigate further..

I throw my TV model number into google {KDS-R50XBR1} with the phrase 1080p and check what I get back. I see two links of interest:

"All the SXRD projectors mentioned above, some LCD displays, and many DLP projectors as well, are now supporting 1080p resolution. 1080p is the best that the HDTV standard has to offer. Unfortunately, there are no sources that currently put out 1080p. For that reason, most HDTVs today do not accept 1080p signals as input. Some exceptions are the Sony VPL-VW100 and the HP MD6580n. I’ve heard that the Qualia Sony projectors can be retrofitted with 1080p HDMI inputs. Next year HD DVD, Blu-ray, and the PS3 all debut. And all of those devices should be able to put out 1080p. So if you plan on using 1080p, your choices today are limited."

with quote:

"Sony’s claim that 1080p is “true high definition” is ridiculous when you consider the fact that their PlayStation 3 will be able to output a 1080p signal through its two HDMI outputs, yet none of their high-definition televisions, not even the KDS-R60XBR1, can actually accept such a signal."

So in conclusion, Sony's SXRD TVs, the one I paid $5000 for last year (which Sony actually displayed hooked to their PS3s at E3) and has a native fucking resolution of 1080p cannot actually receive a 1080p signal. So all in all, when my 360 was plugged in at 1080i the TV was naturally emulating the 1080p signal although an actual 1080p signal sent from a PS3 would not receive any superior picture quality.

All in all, I'm not really that upset, nor am I pissed at buying my TV (though I'm not gonna pick up another Sony set). I'm pissed that Sony has been promoting this resolution of the ps3 for the past year and a half and their high-end TVs havent even been able to support the resolution.
