I chose to watch the unrated version of The Last House on the Left remake over the rated R theatrical version. The dvd gives you both options, but I'm a bit spoiled to unrated. I want to be able to see it all!
The movie starts out with Krug being driven in a cop car to prision and getting side swiped by a truck driven by his confedants, and thus your crazy lunatics are on the loose -
And instead of the family living at the "Last House" it's going to be their vacation home.
The movie continues to follow the original story line pretty closely, but with a modern twist on it.
Honestly, this was pretty much the same movie as the original(With the absence on the awesome music that the 1972 film had.) It was just tweeked and change for the newer generation of horror movie fans. It wasn't as sadistic, demented, or gruesome as the original, but I think it did justice to the original film. Alot of other directors should take a class from Dennis Iliadis on how to remake a movie and not destroy it, which is saying alot as this is only his second film - but then again, Wes Craven was the Producer for this remake and that alone might have been way it wasn't destroyed.
There were a handful of things that didn't really work for me. I'm not going to give any spoilers, but if you've seen the original and you also see this one - you'll know what I'm talking about.
The other thing this film failed at was being able to create the extremely creepy and uncomfortable atmospere that Craven was able to do with the original. There were times in the Craven version that I would cringe at what was being done. I never felt that was at any point during this one.
I really liked this remake, but still prefer the 1972 version. I think most people who have seen both will feel the same. But, it does give me hope that the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street will be good too, since it was also a Wes Craven film. It's blasphemy to decimate a Wes Craven movie!
