Morning was not his best time of day by any stretch of the meaning. But today he woke up in a rather good mood. Rolling over, he smiled pleasantly before heading off to take a shower. Once he had finished he went back into the bedroom and opened the patio doors. "Rise and shine," he hummed softly. The day was sunny and warm without a lick of breeze or cloud in the sky. He loved how peaceful it was.
He quietly slipped on an old pair of faded blue jeans and made his way downstairs. The place was littered with the vestiges of last evening's dinner party and he set about cleaning everything up.
Clyde was sitting on the coffee table watching the National Geographic channel. His eyes briefly followed the man as he brought the glasses and empty champagne bottle into the kitchen.
He ground and then brewed coffee. When he turned on the satellite radio, there was a shriek from Clyde. The monkey proceeded to turn up the TV to try and drown out the music. "Hey... turn that down, we have a guest," he growled and quickly grabbed the remote, switching the TV to headset mode. "Here, use this." He put the headset on Clyde who immediately settled back to watching his favorite program, The Dog Whisperer.
Dishes everywhere! He peered at them as if his gaze alone would prompt them into the dishwasher. After a sip of coffee he started to clean the kitchen. Plates, flatware, pots and sauté pans, everything was neatly stacked. A couple of Cascade 2-in-1 Action Packs, and the dishwasher was running. He washed the crystal glasses by hand and then set them on a linen cloth to air dry. He cleaned the countertops and range then swept the floor. When he was done he leaned back and took a few more sips of coffee.
He heard his guest who was up and showering. He sipped more coffee. His stomach growled and a slight frown came to his lips. He should make them something to eat. He moved to the refrigerator and surveyed its contents. Taking out the ingredients for fruit salad and omelets, he started to prepare the meal.
He sliced an apple and a pear then threw in some raspberries, grapes, banana and kiwi. After he mixed it with a little apple juice he made up three bowls. Two he put on the eat-in counter, the third he brought over to Clyde who placed it between his legs without missing a moment of his show. "What, no thank you?" he asked with a playful grin. The monkey peered up at him for a moment and then he jumped into his arms and planted a series of kisses on his lips. "That's better," he chuckled and placed the monkey back down.
As he was cooking the omelets, a song came on the radio and he sang along. "When I look back, boy I must have been green. Bopping in the country, fishing in a stream. Looking for an answer trying to find a sign. Until I saw your city lights honey I was blind."
When all the ingredients were ready he added the eggs, herbs and cream, with a little flare that matched the melody. "They said get back honky cat, better get back to the woods. Well I quit those days and my redneck ways. And oh… the change is gonna do me good."
While the omelets cooked, he sliced fresh bread and popped it into the toaster. "You better get back honky cat, living in the city ain't where it's at. It's like trying to find gold in a silver mine. It's like trying to drink whisky from a bottle of wine."
He put jams and butter on the eat-in and then went back to the stove. "Well I read some books and I read some magazines, about those high class ladies down in New Orleans."
Clyde had come to the counter and was watching him with obvious enjoyment. They monkey swayed to the beat and clapped his hands.
"And all the folks back home well, said I was a fool. They said oh, believe in the Lord is the golden rule." He plated the food and spun around with showmanship to set them on the counter.
"They said stay at home boy, you gotta tend the farm, living in the city boy, is going to break your heart." He brought the toast over and smiled at his guest who had been leaning against the entryway for some time now.
"But how can you stay, when your heart says no?" He handed him a mug of coffee. "How can you stop when your feet say go?" He grabbed the spatula and used it as a microphone. "They said get back honky cat, better get back to the woods. Well I quit those days and my redneck ways. And oh, oh, oh... the change is gonna do me good!"
One more spin for the finale and he tossed the spatula into the sink. Kronos grabbed a fresh cup of coffee and grinned at his guest. "I hope you like omelets, Caspian."
