Chris always loved bubble baths.
He loved the tranquility, the solitude.
He didn't understand why more people didn't take the time to enjoy the simplistic pleasure.
He loved laying in the bathtub, only a handful of candles illuminating the room as the sleet pelted against the window.
He loved the smell and feel of the vanilla scented bubbles he poured into the water.
But most of all he loved when Barrett slipped in behind him and wrapped him in his strong arms.
He loved to turn the water on hot and watch as the steam rolled up the walls to collect on the ceiling and just when the heat felt like it was about to suffocate him he opened the shower door to breath in the cold air as it hit his face.
Barrett would smile brightly and chuckle but if he thought it was ridiculous for two grown men to spend three hours soaking in a bubble bath he kept it to himself and for that Chris was grateful.
Barrett was new to this lifestyle and he was always uncomfortable in public with Chris, trying to put up a manly front, but in the bathtub he didn't seem to care how gay it might be perceived, he let the hot water wash away all his insecurities and tension.
Barrett was always amazed at how much Chris enjoyed something so, well, stereo-typically gay but none the less he enjoyed watching Chris enjoy himself so much and found himself in turn enjoying the moments just as much as his lover.
He loved to watch Chris as he ran his hand along the water, collecting bubbles and running them through his fingers.
He always expected the quarterback to bring his hand to his mouth and blow the bubbles into the air, but he never did.
Chris seemed so childish in the water and it gave Barrett an odd since of satisfaction. On the field Barrett was the young one, the inexperienced rookie, but in this bathroom he was the supportive one, the one that wrapped Chris in his arms. He felt dominate for once in his life and it felt good, even it was for only three hours.
Chris used melon scented body wash because, he might be gay but he still had a functioning penis and melons were respectable, not girly like lavender or berries. He liked eating melons, no reason he couldn't smell like them too.
Barrett always said he liked men because they where men, they felt, looked, smelt and acted like men but Chris never failed to notice that Barrett couldn't seem to keep his hands off of his silky soft, bubble soaked skin.
They'd lay there in the bathtub, limbs tangled together, their heartbeats and breath seeming to synchronize. Barrett would lean forward and kiss the damp blonde curls on Chris' head but neither would talk, both too afraid of ruining the perfect moment they shared.
These were the moments Chris lived for. Times when nothing else in the world mattered. Not two-a-days, drills, plays, stats, not even a 4-12 season. Just him and his boyfriend and the easy silence between them that said so much and nothing at all at the same time.
But they were simply that, moments that had to end eventually. The bubbles would dissipate leaving the water cloudy and gray with a few traces of shampoo suds floating around. Their toes and fingers would wrinkle , the water would go cold and the candles would melt down. Chris would pull out the stopper and as the water began to drain he couldn't help feeling a bit disappointed.
Once they were both dry and clothed Barrett would grab Chris, push him against the wooden door and kiss him soft and sensual. It was his last chance to assert his dominance over the older man. Once they stepped out of their temporary sanctuary they entered the real world again, the world where football was what mattered and Barrett was the one wrapped in Chris' arms as they laid on the couch watching football footage.
Just before he falls asleep, listening to Chris' heartbeat as his hand rubs his back Barrett decides that maybe Chris isn't the only one who loves bubble baths so much.
