Having seen the footage of the London police effectively murdering another passer-by, I feel ashamed to be living in this city. Something fundamental is wrong with the british society.
just watched the footagepopsimonApril 8 2009, 21:11:32 UTC
i cant see how this can be construed as murder or reflective of british society. the footage would indicate a single strike assault. whilst this is clearly inappropriate, the cause of death cannot be determined from the footage.
media reports that he died of a heart attack do not indicate that this was definitely connected to the earlier assault; the assault could be an aggravating factor but the individual had a long history of alcoholism which can result in many health issues including heart disease leading to early mortality.
and i see it as one example of many, including an inequal society, the anti-terrorist laws, the way those laws are actually used, maternity benefits, nhs, frequency of teen pregnancies, number of illiterate youths leaving school and high frequency of drug abuse over the entire population. to name a few indicators.
i'd elaborate exactly what i mean except i've got a screaming sloth launched over my shoulder...
The Met: a thin blue line keeping London safe from alcoholic street vendors and Brazilian Electricians since 1829. Sigh.
Unlike kroker, I don't see it as being particularly reflective of British society either. There's always some idiot with a badge, just like there's always some dick in a demonstration with a smokebomb or a brick.
The reason I think it's reflective is that the behaviour shown was an example of other heavy handed policing approaches used at G20 and the Northholt climate camp. The fact that the general population tolerates this sort of policing and the general increase in police powers and abuse of the current laws regarding stop and search is reflective of an apathy and disregard for rights and liberties.

There's certainly something wrong with the Metroplitan Police. They seem to like murdering and/or shooting innocent people rather a lot.
