Twilight and Transformers - both massive box office hits. Not for me, no thanks, no way. I can't help it if people like that stuff.

Avatar was meh. I liked it when I was watching it. It's pretty enough. But really it's just a trifle. It's a copycat plot with underdeveloped, wasted characters. I never ever need to see it again. I'd rather go re-watch Aliens. It's too bad that stuff like this and Transformers makes money, because it just keeps sending the message that bad scripts are ok. (

Don't misunderstand me though. Avatar is waaaaaay better than Transformers. I mean I never once wanted to punch myself in the face during it.

People weren't not going to go, and once the marketing blitz begins, people go to see it because they it's not worth being left out. It's a self-sustaining marketing/zeitgeist reaction. That movie had logic and plot holes you could spill mid-air waterfalls out of. Pretty, but don't think too long on it or at all. The original treatment sounds like it would've made a less consumable but more interesting film.

To the "copycat plot" comment: EVERYTHING is Shakespeare. Take most movies and I could find SOMETHING with a similar plot line. Not hard. I think this was an excellent execution of the "copycat plot." James Cameron had even said that it was similar to Dances with Wolves. There are a ton of other Dances with Wolves stories...Pocahontas is in the same vein and that happened. Does that mean Dances with Wolves suck? Or how about "The Last Samurai"? I am sure there is a Star Trek episode or two that is similar to Avatar...Insurrection par example....I can go on...

I haven't seen Transformers. Never will. Same goes for that crap vampire shit (though I did buy the Stephanie Meyer comic book...Oh my god...it is so bad. It's hilariously bad. Maybe the most boring/hillarious comic book ever written).

I keep hearing that reply - that nothing is new. Yada Yada. But the fact is that some things feel cliche and some don't. Avatar's story does, because it hews too closely to those recently developed movies you mentioned without doing much new and interesting with the story or characters. I think it's a bad copycat version because there's no nuance. When Sully goes to the Na'vi he's adopted in with very little struggle. Five minutes and he's in. Why? Because the planet, Deus ex Machina, says so. Why does the planet do that? Have an opinion? It's never said. The planet's apparently really good with hunches. A good similar movie would have Sam need to prove himself and make that infiltration hard so it feels earned ( ... )

I love Avatar. Yeah, the plot is kinda cheap and it's been done before, but what hasn't? We were taught in class to answer "It's all been done before" with "But not by me!"

It was a very pretty and fun movie.
