So, we've been getting these mailings from the State Comptroller's Office, addressed to our particular residence but in the name of some guy we never heard of.
The seventh (or so) time this happened, instead of writing "Return to Sender" on it, I stuck the envelope in a larger envelope, with an explanatory cover letter, addressed directly to the Comptroller herself. This morning someone on the Comptroller's staff called to double-check the details ... apparently the envelopes did indeed (as I suspected) contain checks. And they have no record of getting any of them back through the mail.
So, apparently they're going to try to reach this guy and correct his address, and also find out if the checks have been cashed. If they have, well, I don't think it's really a lot of money, but there's probably a felony involved somewhere. If they *haven't* been cashed, they'll still have to find out what happened to them.
And hopefully the guy will eventually start getting his money. Unless this was all part of some elaborate mail fraud.
And I'll probably never know what actually winds up happening with it!
ETA: Well, I was wrong. The lady called back to say the address was off by one digit, and apparently the postman's just been going, "Oh yeah, that guy lives right there," and bringing them across the street when he makes the mistake of leaving it here. As to why I don't know my neighbor's name after 8 years - well, he works nights, and his wife (to whom I speak a couple of times a year) always calls him "my husband."
