Woman's inhumanity to woman - interesting how women participate in their own oppression. But I am discovering from the other books I am reading, that there is a lot about just trying to find some power in our society.
Sex at dawn : the prehistoric origins of modern sexuality - supposedly things were more equal between the sexes before agriculture. When there were no food reserves, when ppl were just trying to survive. Joy. Doesn’t give me much hope for the future. And why all the talking about how matriarchy would be so much better - if the only way to really achieve it if everyone were really just ignorant & one step away from starvation. Double-joy. Something completely new is needed. Stop looking back everyone people & try & figure out how we can work things in a new way.
The hidden face of Eve : women in the Arab world - OMG so fucking depressing. But illuminating on how oppression crushes a life. Kind of like a worst case scenario if we give up on feminism & rights for women. There are varying degrees of this behaviour all around the world - and they think it’s natural & truly believe that this is how women are - most or even all stereotypes of women seem to me to be in big part the behaviour of any oppressed and/or abused person.
Getting to yes : negotiating agreement without giving in - Nicki is reading for her Negotiating class - she recommended it - my mom had to read it in one of her courses too - highly readable & recommended. I am enjoying it.. need to really take notes on it.
Tartan (Textiles That Changed the World) - GREAT ideas, taken photos of what I like - but I want to still actually read it for the history & info. I need this book.
Woman as design : before, behind, between, above, below - woman objectified?? I like bodies, this has lots of them in it. Why aren’t men “as design”? Why aren’t they seen as beautiful. Man bums are the best. Maybe penises can be thought of as functioning skin tags that various fluids seep from?? (eww I know) but breasts are kind of gross too. Swollen sweat glands? Big soft sebaceous cysts. That bobble around like a couple of left over xmas oranges left in the bottom of your stocking. Flop flop. Little boobs are better - they don’t flop or hurt as much when they joggle. Damn breasts hurt. Do scrotums hurt as much. Maybe if testicles were as big as oranges.
Inua : spirit world of the Bering Sea Eskimo - a few more masks to draw then I will return. Damn I love African & Inuit masks. I have a couple of more ready to take out once I am finished with this one.
Ambiguous images : gender and rock art - for doodles, just about ready to return it.
101 alphabets - I love this book - I want it, I want more books like it - using it for drawing, doodling, writing artistically, making cards & quotes in my sketchbook.
Speed, ecstasy, ritalin : the science of amphetamines - extremely informative. I can’t bring myself to return it yet.
Come to me : stories - beautiful, the other one I took out of hers I didn’t like so much, but just because I couldn’t relate :-( Also finished a while ago, but I can’t give up - I must buy it I guess.
Sleeping with the dictionary - wonderful! I want my own copy of this book. I love the sounds soooooooooooo much! I finished it awhile a go but don’t want to return it. I want all the poems in it. I wonder if McNally’s has it.
Boy : tales of childhood - Roald Dahl's life story
Dirty beasts - rhymes!
Roald Dahl's Revolting rhymes - fairytales with a twist, done in rhyme!
Roald Dahl's book of ghost stories. - compilation of ghost stories, so far so pretty good.
Skim - graphic novel - life of a girl, it would be cool to write a book like this & illustrate it.
Appearance and power - depressing, but also very informative. People are sheep.
Body work : the social construction of women's body image - to try & figure out why I just can’t seem to make body-love stick
Critical bodies : representations, identities and practices of weight and body management - haven’t started yet
Tipping the scales of justice : fighting weight-based discrimination - need to take more notes. Very good info.
Rethinking thin : the new science of weight loss--and the myths and realities of dieting - just took out yesterday, haven’t started yet
Revolting bodies? : the struggle to redefine fat identity - just took out yesterday, started to read. Looking forward to getting into this one. My body comfort doesn’t seem to be very adhesive. It keeps sliding off. Maybe it needs to be refreshed, this looks like it might help?
2 Lousie Penny books (# 5 & 6 I think) that I must get through too. Murder in Quebec!
