During my quest to see every best picture...
I am on a quest to see every movie that has ever won an Academy Award for Best Picture. I think it's a pretty good quest. I like it. I began this quest when I got Netflix and I have every single Best Picture winner on my queue (bringing my total movies on my Netflix queue to 299).
Because sometimes this quest feels more like a chore than it ought to - movies from 1929 aren't necissarily my style - I mix the old movies in with new ones that I want to see. That's why right now I have Mutiny on the Bounty (the 1935 version, not the 1962 version), Midnight Cowboy (1969 - the only X rated movie to win Best Picture), and Miss Congeniality 2 (what? you thought I'd pay to go see that?) at home. I watched Mutiny on the Bounty yesterday, it was ok. Tonight, I watched Midnight Cowboy.... not bad.... I don't really have a very strong opinion about it. You have to have a certain taste for late sixties, early seventies movies... it has a very similarly 'lost' sentiment as Easy Rider (also 1969) or even St. Elmo's Fire (which was, of course, made in 1985 and not 1969 at all).
So anyway, that's my quest. I'm doing fairly well - when I started, I'd already gotten to 1984 without trying (saving Million Dollar Baby - I know... it's good... I'm working on it...) Anyway - Mike asked what the plot of Midnight Cowboy was... so here's my synopsis. It contains spoilers. Also after the break - my full list.
Midnight Cowboy: by KristinMarie
- This guy from texas moves to NYC to become a male prostitute. he's very bad at it. He's played by angelina jolie's dad
- While being bad at being a male prositute, not because he is bad at sex but becuase he's nice and gullible, he gets hustled by rainman
aka dustin hoffman
- Instead of kicking the shit out of riainman, angelina jolie's dad befriends him and they are poor and cold and rainman's a cripple and he has a bad cough and is sick and wants to move to florida
- angelina jolie's dad finally gets better at being a male prostitute just in time for rainman to get even more sick and crippled
- and so angelina jolie's dad gives up his clients and robs a guy who wanted gay sex from him and probably killed him with a telephone so they can take a bus to florida from NYC
- and when they are 5 miles outside of miami, angelina jolie's father has an epiphany and realizes he's no good at being a male prostitute and instead wants to work outside now that he's in miami.
- Then rainman dies
- and the movie ends
