i haven't written anything a couple years, but today i got the urge.
this week has been devastating for everyone. they say bad things happen in 3's... ed mcmahon, farrah, and michael jackson. each loss was a great one, but the one that had most effect on me, personally was the death of michael jackson. i just got home and when i turned the tv on to msnbc, i heard the man was hospitalized. over the next half hour or so, the anchors continued to discuss how weird he was and all of his faults. he was hospitalized for cardiac arrest, the chances of someone coming to after this is slim to none... rather than reflecting on the positives of this great man, they continued to bring up issues that make him seem like less of a man. i thought to myself, maybe if he does pass, they'll lighten up and try to help us to remember the good... most channels didn't.
yes, there have many, many crazy things surrounding his life. and yes, they are a part of him. but during a time of loss and mourning, i feel that is important to celebrate the person. everyone has short comings and i understand that because he was MICHAEL JACKSON that the entire world feels the need to be involved but man!!! yes, the man's indiscretions were huge but isn't this the time we should be remembering him as the number 1 selling musician of all time, the humanitarian, one of the most recognizable dancer/singer performer in general ever, a father, a son, brother... there are tons of ways to remember him, can't we give the respect where it's due.
then there's mtv. i used to watch mtv religiously. i couldn't wait for the new music and videos to come out. it's not mtv any more, it's crappy reality tv, which i can't stand and the music now is crap (don't get me wrong, it's fun to dance to but it lacks substance). michael jackson helped to usher in mtv from the start, his videos were always incredible, i loved the mini films and couldn't wait to learn the dances. he's influenced and cleared the way for so many of the artists that are around today. but on the day that he left us, they didn't even play full videos. the only thing they did in his honor was play clips of a couple videos... i mean really. in the 80's michael jackson was mtv, and all they did as far as any sort of dedication was a short speech by sway. today, the radio stations were no better. i scanned many stations, including ones that i don't normally listen to... the only station playing his music kearth. his music played and still plays a huge role in our lives, the lives our parents and the lives of those who weren't even born when he made his hits. he could have easily been played on just about every radio station but one chose to give a full tribute. i don't understand it.
michael jackson was an inspiration to many. i believe that many of the problems that he had in life arose from the fact that he was never allowed to be normal. he was a superstar at 5 years old, he was never given the chance to grow up as a normal boy. he couldn't go the park or disneyland like we all did. he wasn't able to make the little mistakes that we all make to learn how to deal with situations. he didn't have someone teach him to manage his money. i believe it was his celebrity was what made him the way he was and i am truly sorry that we will never get to understand it from his perspective. we won't ever have the chance to hear michael jackson reflect on his own life or see the big come back we've been all waiting for. there is no doubt that he will be missed and that is influence will never been forgotten. i love you michael jackson, my heart and prayers go out to your family.
