It's baaa--aack.
We're on the southern edge of a storm that could drop 10 inches in areas farther north. The freezing rain started here about an hour ago. Given that it was initially supposed to be several inches of wet snow, I guess I'll take it...and try to forget that the thaw was proceeding well and the ground wasn't even all that muddy.
Anyway, it will likely rain for the rest of the day. Possible snow tomorrow, and again later in the week. I mean, it really was too early for Spring. I recall late March snowstorms. We still have a ways to go until we can settle into the warm.
Dammit.
When my grandmother (my dad's mom) died back in 1981, it fell on my dad to act as executor and pack up the house. Dad was never one for throwing things away, so we wound up with lots of things that people don't usually keep. Receipts from the 1960s. Potholders and hairnets and old spools of thread.
One thing that my mom had recovered from Grandma's sewing kit was a tailor's tape measure. It consisted of about 5 feet of tape wound around a stiff card of what I initially believed was leather but might well be linoleum. I found it as I went through Mom's things, and stuck it in various handbags as needed because you never know when you might need to measure something in a store.**
Notice the partial use of past tense.
I used the tape yesterday to measure the inseams of some pants I was sending out for hemming. Left it unfurled on my bed. Left my bedroom door open.
Gaby was outside. King was not. He vanished from sight while I was in the kitchen. After a couple of minutes, I went looking for him because when things get too quiet around here the results are never good. Found him in my bedroom, chewed remnants of the tape measure still in his mouth. He swallowed some of it--it's cloth, so it too shall pass--but most of it was lying in tatters on the floor.
I was angry. Yes, my fault for leaving it out where The Mouth could find it, but still. "Bad dog!" I shouted, as Bad Dog sunk to the floor and looked guilty.***
I initially tossed the whole mess, but later in the day, I extracted the linoleum card from the depths of the trash, figuring I could use it to hold my new, Candy! Pink! tape measure.
The company in question is the Edward V Klug Manufacturing Company of Baltimore MD: "Coveralls, Overalls, Pants & Shirts Ready Made and Made to Order" At the time the tape was made, they were located at 1039 Hillen St., Cor. East. No zip code. The tape was made pre-zip code days.
Now the company is located at 1209 East 25th Street. They employ 14 people on average, and have been around since 1948. Annual sales range from $1 million to $2.5 million. In 2009, they received
a contract from the DOD for $4821. I can't help but hope that they do well.
As an aside, that DOD contracts site is pretty interesting. Also under the Ks, 2 contracts awarded to
Klown-Magicians of Mesquite, Texas. "Agents and Managers for Artists, Athletes, Entertainers, and Other Public Figures." 2002 and 2003, for $700 and $450, respectively. I'm guessing birthday parties? Performances at a base or vet's hospital? Just guesses.
It's still raining. Laundry's in the dryer. I really need to get some work done. Spent too much time online yesterday following Events As They Happened.
**I learned this trick from Jody Lynn Nye. I'm not usually that well prepared.
***He's currently sleeping next to my chair because that's the sort of fear I inspire.
