Bewilderment---LotS

Denna walked through the courtyard, hand supporting her back, and was grateful for the soft breeze running through the trees of the People's Palace.  There was no place like it in the world; peaceful, secure, beautiful and rigid.  All things she enjoyed.  Life was so much quieter for Mord'Sith with Richard Rahl on the throne, but she couldn't find it in herself to care.  He was a good leader; strong, but compassionate.  They were qualities she admired in him.  But more than that, she was glad he let her keep her life.

She was surprised as not that he kept her close, but she figured out soon enough that she was as much a prisoner there as he ever was with her.  She was chained through formal protocol to remain there, following the orders of Lord Rahl, as she'd been instructed, even as her nature rebelled against serving one that she trained.  But she could see in some of his movements, in some of his words, hints of her there in his heart.

It warmed her to an extent to know that her training, her mastery of her art, had helped him become the man now ruling D'Hara.  She kept these thoughts very much to herself; Cara and Kahlan both thought it'd have been more wise to kill her.  Zedd, the wizard, had been her only ally.  She was trying to change, but old habits are the hardest to break, especially if one's habits are what has shaped her entire adult life.

So, she walked, knowing that, as always, her life wasn't her own.  It belonged to Lord Rahl, and as such, she would abide by his rules.  Especially while she stopped to understand this concept he referred to as 'friendship'.  She'd had camaraderie with her fellow Mord'Sith, but this...thing with the Wizard wasn't camaraderie.  It was something new, and she was determined to understand it, or die trying.

lots, legend of the seeker, denna
