My mom just emailed this to me, and I'm heartbroken!
Bay of Naples Family Camping This is the campground that I grew up going to with my family for 2 weeks every summer. All of my memories of camping and summer vacations are at that campground!
* biking around the tree-root covered paths,
* climbing the big tires and tire swings
* the smell of the washing machines & dryers on the walk back from the rec hall
* playing in the very old and bee-infested gazebo that was graffiti'd everywhere
* hayrides down to get ice cream
* the looooooong walk to the beach (which wasn't long so much as a very steep hill for little legs)
* the first crush on a boy i had, who was covered head to toe in freckles and could crack every joint (lol)
* playing air hockey in the rec hall
* watching my sister spend her entire $10 bill on gummie worms only (10 cents each) and then watching her eat each and every one of them. we saw those worms again about 3 hours later...
* playing "she's like the wind" from dirty dancing on the jukebox, which would also play out in the gazebo, and getting frustrated when it skipped every single time on "feel the breath in my fa... breath in my fa... breath in my fa..." (i still hear that when i hear that song on the radio lol)
* playing all other cheesy 80s music on it like "i love rock and roll" and every aerosmith song they had
* getting excited every time the songo river queen (a river steamboat replica) went by
There's so much more I could probably keep going on about. I went back there once a couple years ago with my mom on our way back from Sebago Lake State Park, and we just parked and walked around. They'd updated it a bit, but for the most part, it was almost exactly as I had remembered it.
We have a brochure that they put out in the 80s that has a picture of my family and I camping there. We're also in a bunch of the other pictures of us on the playground or riding the hayride, etc. I'm so glad my parents saved those.
It's sad because I really always thought that someday I'd go back there as an adult. There really was no other campground like it, and we did try many others. Nothing quite felt the same to us. I'm going to miss it :(
