Have you seen my motivation?

I am supposed to be writing my first paper for Business Ethics-my first graduate class, which I began last week. I am supposed to choose an ethical philosophy or blend of ethical philosophies that seems to be the most efficacious ethical philosophy for business life as I know it and explain why my choice ia good one and superior to other philosophies. I have absolutely no idea where to begin with this paper since ethics deals with determining what is right and I am, apparently, supposed to figure out a way to determine what is right in all situations. That obviously is impossible and so, being the perfectionist that I am, I do not want to write a paper in which there is no definitive right answer. Plus the paper is only supposed to be one to two pages long....that's not very much to discuss the benefits of one theory over all the others.

On the upside this class comes complete with lectures that I can watch on WebCT and the professor is hilarious, so watching for 2-3 hours each week is not a bad thing at all. I've only watched the first lecture, (since I just completed my first week of class), and have found him to be a very engaging educator. I think watching the lectures is going to be very helpful for writing my case studies in the upcoming weeks as they seem to spend a bit of time discussing cases during the class.

In other news....the holiday season is over and it went FAST! Since Christmas Eve fell on a Sunday this year Jim had to be at FOUR services on Christmas Eve, (he was preaching at the 9 and 10:30 a.m. services and assisting at the 5:30 and 7 p.m. Christmas Eve services). The majority of his father's side of the family came to the 10:30 service and then back to our apartment for a Christmas Eve brunch. It was very good to see everyone, though a bit chaotic given the busy church service schedule. We got some fabulous gifts-wine, cheese, Jim's mom's homemade fruitcake, gloves, Godiva Chocolate Liquer, all of the seasons of 24, various DVDs and CDs, in addition to some monetary gifts and giftcards to Barnes and Noble, Borders, Starbucks, Target, an Italian restaurant here in the city, plustickets to a Mozart opera in February and tickets to a Bulls game. After his family left around 2:30 we went for a walk to Blockbuster and Jamba Juice for a smoothie, which turned out be dinner as Jim had to be back at the church by 4:30 p.m. to prepare for the 5:30 service. When the last service of the day was over, around 8:30/9 p.m., we went over to the Donovan's for a drink, which turned into a couple of drinks. Lets just say we were dangerously close to repeating last Christmas as Jim and I had hardly eaten all day due to the incredibly busy service schedule and then each had three, (quite large and strong), drinks in the two and a half hours following the last church service. A little headache was had Christmas morning, but it had disappeared by the time the 10:30 a.m. service was over. Jim and I spent Christmas Day getting our Jack Bauer fix after church. We watched the final disc of season five. It was fabulous! That show is so addicting!

I worked quite hard at Sweet Pea's the week of Christmas, putting in extra hours to make up for being closed for the holiday and getting everything ready for our new session of classes and workshops that began this past week. I had to double check all of the schedules, found a couple of conflicts and had to juggle quite a bit to rectify those situations, prepare the desk calendar, completely update the website, update all of the flyers, put out the newsletter, update the white board outside of the studio, and prepare announcements for the instructors, all in addition to my regular duties in the office. To top it off, the credit card machine decided to break down, so I had to enter all of the credit card transactions manually through Authorize.net! It was a long week. Jim was also sick that week, so he spent the time that school was not in session at St. James trying to recover.

We spent New Years at our friend, Michelle's. She had a nice party with great drinks, food and fun. We played Taboo and '90's Trivial Pursuit-the girls won both games-and rang in the new year. I played designated driver as I was getting a bit of Jim's cold and alcohol doesn't really mix with cold medicine. The drive home at 2 a.m. was quite the adventure! There were people everywhere just standing in the middle of the streets...some hailing taxis, but most just drunk and standing in the middle of the streets. It made me quite paranoid driving. New Years Day was pretty lazy. We slept in 'til nearly 2 p.m.-I need at least eight hours of good solid sleep and 2 a.m. is WAY past my bedtime! As a treat we went to Outback Steakhouse for dinner....mmmm!

It's been a fairly uneventful week as I try to establish a routine for myself in terms of exercise, work and homework. I've been good so far-I erged Monday through Friday this week for 20-30 minutes per day, averaging just over 4K each time. Now I just need to buckle down and write my Ethics paper!!! One more day to get it done before I am officially behind schedule! Hopefully I find my motivation tomorrow after church! :)
