I decided to eat lunch outside today. I went to my usual spot inside, toook a seat, then decided I should be outside, enjoying the weather. Not too hot, not too cold. About 65 and slightly breezy. I walked to a bench somewhat in the shade. While I was eating my lunch (yummy salad with cucumbers, green peppers and carrots), I happened to notice a bee on the ground. I have a special knack for locating bugs near me(one day it happened to be five or six roaches crawling around a garbage can), probably because they freak me out a little. This bee was behaving very oddly. It looked like a pretty big bee, possibly a wasp. I don't know much about bees/wasps. This one was yellow with stripes, had large wings and a very long body. I suppose I noticed it because you don't often see bees walking around on the ground. That's exactly what this one was doing though. At first I thought it was just tired of flying or something. But, it kept extending it's bottom half (and stinger, I assumed) into the air and kind of moving it around. It was very odd. Or maybe it's just some bee thing I've never been privy to until now. Two people walked very near this bee and it didn't fly off. After the second person walked near it, the bee kind of reared up. Two other people walked by it a little later and one of them stepped on the bee. It walked off into the grass, seemingly unphased. Or maybe it was crawling off to die, hidden in the leaves.

I wondered if perhaps the bee was hurt. I thought about stepping on it, crushing it, ending it's suffering. But I was afraid that if I missed or didn't kill it, the bee would just be pissed off. And possibly come after me. Although, thinking back on it, the bee probably was hurt. I watched the bee for at least 10 minutes. The activities seemed to indicate the bee was in "pain" - if bees can feel pain. I probably should have stepped on it and ended its misery.

That was my lunch activity. Take what you will from it.

deep thoughts
