This basically sums up why I hate the president:
(Taken from yesterday's NY Times)

But, he [Bush] continued: “It’s hard to describe the devastation down here. It was massive in its destruction, and it spared nobody. United States Senator Trent Lott had a fantastic house overlooking the bay. I know because I sat in it with he and his wife. And now it’s completely obliterated. There’s nothing.”

Are you serious?!? That's what you're upset about? That your rich friend lost his fantastic house overlooking the bay? I can barely form thoughts, I'm so pissed off at that. Trent Lott's life is not ruined because he lost his house. But, many of the poor people hit by Katrina DID have their lives ruined. They lost their homes, families, jobs, everything. Why aren't you talking about them?

It really upsets me that Katrina has become some publicity stunt. Bush is trying to recast his image and point out all the good he's done. He's taking "full responsibility" now for the disastrous response - but I think it's a little late for that. And Democrats are pointing out how much still needs to be done and how Bush failed - and is still failing - the people of New Orleans. Lots of politicians are there now pointing fingers but is anyone really doing anything to help these people? It doesn't appear so. Oh wait, except for Hilary Duff who delivered toys and school supplies to some kids. How touching. To be honest, I really didn't know how much damage still existed in the city - because it's not news anymore. It's news this week because of the anniversary but next week it will be out of the papers/TV programs again. Forgotten by most people not personally affected by the storm. This could lead into a rant about how much I dislike the sensationalism of news these days, but I'll try to stay on track. I really should have gone and volunteered a year ago. I'm toying with the idea now. It's just so easy to stay in our little bubbles and not really realize what's going on around us. I don't want to be in my bubble anymore. I'm fortunate to have not gone through any major tragedies. I can't even imagine what it would be like to lose my home, to go weeks without knowing if my family was alive, to be uprooted and moved to a football stadium. I can't imagine the panic, the hurt, the filth, not having food or water, walking by dead or almost dead bodies. These people are strong people and they deserve help. The rich people can rebuild. The poor people have lost everything and really have no means to rebuild. I just wish everyone would stop pointing fingers and pick up a shovel.
