I won't do a full meta here. Just note one tiny detail.
I'm getting very VERY interested in Castiel's 'prayer' at the end. (Remember. We have never seen Castiel pray before. Angels on Cas's level do NOT talk to God.) That was powerful enough for me - but once I slowed down and watched for details?
1) Castiel looks up. Light comes down from unspecified source.
2) Castiel says "You son of a bitch" (?? phrase) then "I believed..." and then he CUTS OFF. THe breath pattern is NOT the pattern that would indicate the end of the sentence.
3) Castiel CONTINUES to look up - not speaking - head tilted slightly - for TEN SECONDS. (I timed it twice on my counter.) Folks - ten seconds is FOREVER in television time.
4) The next time Castiel speaks is when he returns the amulet to Dean. "I don't need this anymore."
His explaination is that 'it's useless'. True enough, but if we are just going by what Dean heard in heaven Castiel knew that already. (Working on the idea that Dean and/or Sam have explained things.) WHY is the amulet more useless at that point than earlier? WHAT happened in the ten seconds of silence to impact Castiel so deeply? WHERE has Castiel gone? (He does not leave with the boys.)
My guess/suspicion/speculation is that Castiel not only 'talked to God' ( for the first time in angelic *ever*) but that GOD ANSWERED.
If so, that is .... shiver... totally theologically the most extreme thing ever - and perhaps the set up for one HECK of a plot twist.
