I think it's pretty much a universal sentiment that there really isn't a whole lot to recommend seasons 8 & 9 as representative of the XF mythology. But I'm fairly certain it's probably also a universal realization that without it, we never would have gotten canon representation of the MSR. So, slipshod as the seasons may be, the MSR has to represent. And it was probably the most compelling part of the season, what with Scully going all broken-hearted over the loss of Mulder, the whole IVF thing, then Mulder coming back, them trying to dance around Scully's beach ball belly...then the birth and William "for your father".
Baby William, perhaps the gravest mistake and most important piece of "evidence" that Mulder and Scully were "together". :P If CC did one thing right in S8, it was that sweet sweet kiss at the end of the season. Way to reel me back in, big man.
