A meme of my high school memories, stolen from
idiolecto:
1. Who was your best friend?
Emily
2. What sports did you play?
Is Drill Team a sport? Oh, and I "ran" track my freshman and sophomore years. And by running I mean I jogged a little, walked a lot, and often went to my friends' houses in the middle of practice to get a snack. Clearly I was a stellar athlete.
3. What kind of car did you drive?
I had a 1990 Chevy Lumina that my brothers cleverly named "the Batmobile". (It was black.)
4. It's Friday night, where were you?
Ballet class. I was a big nerd.
5. Were you a party animal?
If going to see the school's modern dance show and then getting malts at the local Christian malt shop with a snall group of friends makes me a party animal, then yes. Otherwise, no.
6. Were you considered a flirt?
Definitely not. I was more like one of the guys. And I cursed them for it.
7. Ever skip school?
Just once. After the AP Calculus test (see? nerd.) we were supposed to go back to school for the afternoon. But my friends and I skipped and went to Emily's house and watched Dirty Dancing. We were so rebellious.
8. Were you a nerd?
See above. I was also Co-President of the Orchestra my senior year. Need more proof?
10. Did you get suspended/expelled?
Never. I got called to the office every other month or so because I had so many tardies to homeroom, but I always got out of detention by crying and promising not to do it again. I can't believe Mr. Tramp let me off over and over again.
11. Can you sing the fight song?
Students of Ames Senior High, proud of our school are we. Cheering the orange and the black on to a victory. (rah, rah, rah) Comrades at work and at play, loyal and true are we. Students of Ames Senior High School, Ames Hi Aims High! (My little brother and sister are in the marching band and I have been to a lot of football games, swim meets, and one or two "marching band extravaganzas" in the past three years. But I'm not ashamed to admit that I had school spirit in high school... sort of.)
12. Who was your favorite teacher?
Mr. Daddow, our communist AP Western Civilization teacher
13. Favorite class?
Honors American Lit
14. What was your school's full name?
Ames Senior High School
15. High school mascot?
The Little Cyclones
16. Did you go to Prom?
Sadly, yes. I went to my junior prom stag. I was on junior senate and we were in charge of planning prom, so I had to put in an appearance. Nobody danced with me, although my ex-boyfriend danced with my best friend to spite me. Senior year I was finally dating a guy I had had a crush on since the summer after my sophomore year. Sadly, once I started dating him I quickly found out I couldn't stand him. But we went to prom, had an ok time, and I couldn't wait to get the hell out of highschool.
17. If you could go back and do it over, would you?
Only if I could bring all my friends from college, my current fashion sense (which isn't much, but better than high school), and remain of legal drinking age.
18. What do you remember most about graduation?
I had a friend who had moved into the district sometime in the middle of high school. I can't remember his name--let's say it was Andy. We were casual acquaintances and had some classes together, and I would always say hi to him when I ran into him in the halls, which was a lot (more than most other people). My graduating class had almost 400 people in it, so I didn't know everyone. But what really shocked me--Andy had a twin brother and I had never known it until they both walked across the stage at graduation! No wonder he looked at me like I was nuts half the time I was saying "Hey Andy!" to him in the halls.
19. Did you smell bad?
I don't think so.
20. Where were you on senior skip day?
My chemistry teacher scheduled an exam on senior skip day and cruelly refused to let anyone who was not there make up the test. So none of my friends skipped. There were probably 40 seniors in school that day--the 2 periods of Honors Chemistry.
21. Did you have a job your senior year?
I worked every day after school and most Saturdays at Robert Thomas Dancenter. I taught pre-ballet and Ballet I, and then when Bob tore his rotator cuff, I took over most of his classes up through middle school for a couple of months. (Middle school girls are the snottiest human beings on the planet.) I also worked in the stockroom doing inventory and fitting shoes. For a long time I could tell you the style number of pretty much anything in the Capezio catalog--not exactly a desirable skill, but kind of freakish. I never used the ladder in the storeroom, and was always getting in trouble for climbing the shelves.
22. Where did you go most often for lunch?
My friend Emily lived a few blocks from school, so most days I would go to their house (they never lock their door) and sleep on their couch and then grab something on my way out the door.
23. Have you gained weight since then?
Yes, but I think it's okay since I didn't hit 100 pounds until my junior year of high school.
24. What did you do after graduation?
Moved to Iowa City, became a Hawkeye fan, and never looked back. (Until I graduated from college and went back to my hometown and started going to high school football games on Friday nights again...)
25. When did you graduate?
Class of 2000. We thought we were so cool!
26. Who was your senior homecoming date?
I didn't go to homecoming my senior year. No one asked me, and I was tired of going with my friends. I bought a dress though and ended up wearing it for my graduation open house.
27. Are you going to your ten year reunion?
Well, I didn't get invited to my 5 year reunion, even though it was held at a bar less than a block from my apartment. (Apparently it was a private reunion for the "popular crowd". Whatevs.) But I just might go. I'd like to see everyone's fat husbands and cute babies.
28. Who was your home room teacher?
the band director, Mr. Ewan
29. Who will repost this after you?
Probably noone, but that's okay. It'll be just like high school...
