Title: Second Chances

Summary: If it weren’t for Monica, Jelena wouldn’t be where she is today.
Author’s Note: I have no idea when they really met but this idea took hold and wouldn’t let go, maybe because I was such a Monica fan.
Jelena considered Monica a role model, for obvious reasons. She was the person who convinced her that anything was possible, even with the country was torn by war.
Monica seemed so far away when she was young. Instead, Jelena enjoyed the more attainable players, such as the fellow Serb who was pushing her to achieve. Ana had similar goals to Jelena and it was easier to deal with the challenge from her than of historic figures.
When she was in her teens, other players replaced Monica for Jelena to emulate. She guessed it was because she wasn't home too often and that broadened her view of the world.
The first time she was introduced to Monica was at a juniors tournament. No words were able to escape her mouth. The fourteen year old couldn’t capture the moment before Monica’s people whisked her away.

Although Jelena making her first semifinal was certainly an achievement, that she soon after met Monica for the second time was when she knew she’d made it to the level of her childhood dreams.
Unlike the meeting when she was a teen, Monica knew her name and admired her spirit on the court. She was proud that she was able to inspire young athletes to such a high level of tennis.
The competitor in Jelena directly asked her whether she or Ana would most likely win the first Grand Slam title.
Prior to that, it had been a serious discussion but this question made Monica laugh. A bright smile that brought back memories of Monica as an idealist teenager, instead of the adult hardened by reality.
It returned just for Jelena. She no longer cared about the answer because Jelena had won something that Ana could never achieve.

Summary: Svetlana knew everything was over.
AuthorsI wrote this before the final and was going to delete it but it seems more fitting now.
It had been nearly a given from the beginning of the tournament that she'd make the final.
When Svetlana made it as well, she knew everything was over.
They had dealt with the same problems on the biggest stage, neither able to close out the final match. Just because Svetlana was a champion before didn't mean anything.
Losing so many times in a row still hit hard.
Maybe she wasn't expected to win the final in most of her appearances but that was little consolation. Svetlana wasn't expected to win this one either.
Holding the winner's trophy would be nice.
But Svetlana will never be able to hold her again because the losing will hurt too much for one of them.
