At smoothbelgian 's request, here's my teeny tiny list of Big Bangs I actually approve of. In no particular order and with no particular rating system, here they are:

1. To Teach the Human Heart the Knowledge of Itself - J2, 45 068 words ~~ I LOVED this. It's poignant and wonderful. I give it my highest recommendation.

2. A Complicated Love and Affection Between Read more... )

OMG, #11 broke my heart over and over again and #12 made me choke laughing over and over again.

And #6 was scary, hot and action-packed, for sure.

Right? So yeah, there's been some good Big Bangs this year, but not many.

But at this point I think #1 would be my favourite. It's amazing how slow and melancholic it is even though the story is supposed to be a happy one. I can't phrase it, it's just wonderful.

Hey, did you read Withdiamonds's fic? It's called something like "I Carry the Suitcase of My Grief in Both Hands, Ma". I thought it was wonderful, with great angst.

And I cannot rec Cormallen's "The Silver Ring" enough. It was pure magic.

I haven't read #1 yet - thanks for the rec. :)

I think I started the first one, but gave up for some reason. I'll go back to it to check what it was. Maybe I just got distracted.

"The Silver Ring" has speaking mice, right? I dunno...

"The Silver Ring" is a fairy tale. However, it's contemporary. I think it would be classified as magical realism.

Anyway, if you approach it as a fairy tale, which the author clearly meant it to be, and keep an open mind (in the way that one would to watch SPN itself), you might like it. I freaking loved it; it's probably my favourite Big Bang this year. It amazed and delighted me.

Clearly, I'll have to go read it right now to see for myself.

(I'm wary of reading fic written by people on my flist, though. What if it sucks, you know? :P )

Well, if it sucks, you don't have to leave a comment. :)

That goes for my fic, too. ;)

Ah, but you see, if it's truly awful, I have the obligation to mock it.
