Lots of naturally short answers tonight. Good for catching up!
Day 19 - When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start drawing right away, or do you thumbnail the idea for further use?
I always thumbnail my work in all instances no matter what. Always always always. Thumbnails are my road map before I start in on the final drawing of an image, and it's how I figure out exactly how I'm going to execute whatever idea I have. I might try six different poses or camera angles for a particular idea before I settle on what I want to ultimately do with it, and thumbnails allow me to figure all of that out. I have entire pages that are nothing but thumbnails for various pieces because I use one sheet of paper for thumbnailing until it is completely full. Sometimes that might be the thumbnails for two image ideas, sometimes twelve. It depends on how clear of an idea I have in my head to start with.
Whenever I get ideas and I don't have the time to really sit down and work on it I will at least scribble down a thumbnail of it for future reference.
Day 20 - Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?
I get bunnied from peoples' artwork a lot, particularly
queenofthecute when it comes to same fandom artwork. I get inspired to draw by looking at other artists' work who are better than I am, too. I study the work of other artists who are skilled in areas I'm not that great at all the time in order to try and figure out how they work and hopefully learn something I can apply to my own work.
As far as writing... I hardly read any fic anymore just because I've gotten so damn picky about characterization and such. The main writing stuff that bunnies me nowadays is pretty much anything Inu-centric by
knittingknots. My artwork does the same for her, so it can turn into a vicious cycle sometimes. lol
Day 21 - Sequels - Have you ever drawn a "sequel" to a pic you drew, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?
This is another odd question from writing to drawing. If you take "Sequel" to mean "additional image to make it a series" then yes, I have done that before. That happened with the Inuyasha circle series as well as all the Bleach character portraits. Sometimes I plan on it being a series, other times it just works out that "hey, I could make a series out of this". There have also been a couple times that I doodled "what happened next" after an image I've done, but I can't think of any examples off the top of my head. As I mentioned before my Inuyasha art directory has well over a thousand images in it.
Day 22 - Have you ever participated in a fest of a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?
When I was in high school I participated in the Harry Potter Monthly Fanart Challenge ALL the time. The prompts were always really fun and it was a great way for me to stretch my brain during a stage in my life when I hadn't really been taught how to really brainstorm yet artistically. Voting would happen at the end of each month and the winner would get to name a theme for the following month. I won a few times and it was always a thrill when it happened, and it made me strive to be the best I could be.
Since moving on to Inuyasha I haven't really participated in any of the challenge groups like "That Time of the Month" because 1. I don't really have the time for it and 2. it wouldn't really be fair. This is going to sound arrogant as hell and I absolutely do not mean it to be, but it isn't the same as when I was in high school and the playing field was pretty even. I'm a professional now while most of the other participants are in junior high and high school with skill levels that are pretty low and non-existent education experience (Art I in high school doesn't count for much in most cases). In the couple times I HAVE drawn something for a prompt, though, I have specified that it isn't for competition and isn't for voting; it was just me getting an idea.
The one challenge I did participate in was a Mother's Day challenge last year at one of the other Inu groups (I forget which one). I fully entered for my piece to be voted on because I was specifically invited to participate by one of the runners of the contest, and I won. The piece was
A Gift For Mother.
Day 23 - When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?
When I post artwork it usually goes on
LJ,
deviantART,
twitter,
tumblr (now that I have one, that is), and sometimes
PaperDemon although I've seriously let that one fall out of date. I don't post fanart to
Kristin's Studio because that is strictly for professional work and my portfolio/resume. LJ and tumblr will really be the best places to see all of my fanart since DA has that ridiculous under age characters rule. That rule bars me from being able to post ANY of my post-manga InuKag artwork that is even in the slightest bit suggestive because even though Kagome is over 18 and married to Inuyasha in the epilogue, DA has determined that Kagome will be under age for all eternity because she was portrayed as 15 for the majority of the series. Epilogues? What epilogues? To quote DA, "epilogues don't count".
I'm sure the creators of whatever series this is being applied to would really appreciate that.
If DA wants to be consistent across the board for that shit then they need to require all nude models in photographs to be at least 37; otherwise they would have been under age for more of their life than they had been of age. It's THAT stupid.
And that was another major derailment but I don't care because I'm still bitter about that BS. Being accused of "exploiting a perceived loophole in policy in order to use an under age character in a sexual manner" when I did no such thing doesn't sit well with me and it never will. It isn't consistent, either, because I see artwork on DA all the time of Kagome completely naked, sexualized, and/or actively fucking someone in images that are obviously meant to be pornographic and they remain untouched for years. I've reported fetish images of Kagome pregnant in her junior high uniform only to have them returned as invalid. I post an image of Inu and Kagome in an intimate moment while still clothed, though, and it gets deleted as under age porn. Rage. Incoherent rage. >:C
Day 18 - Where do you get the most inspiration for your pics (aka "bunnies") from?
Day 17 - Titles - Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the pic? Also, if you do a series of pictures, do you give each piece a title, or not?
Day 16 - Descriptions - Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?
Day 15 - Warnings - What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a pic? Day 14 - Ratings - How high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever drawn higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the picture you're drawing is G-rated instead? (NSFW artwork in the answer)
Day 13 - Do you prefer canon or fanon when you draw? Has drawing fanart for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material? Day 12 - Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" pic of a favorite book or movie (or image) but set in a different fandom?
Day 11 - Genre - Do you prefer certain types of art when you're drawing? What kind do you tend to draw most?
Day 10 - Pairings - Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and drawn a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't draw, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could? Day 9 - Pairings - For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to draw?
Day 8 - Do you draw OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs. Day 7 - Have you ever had a pic change your opinion of a character? Day 6 - When you draw, do you prefer drawing male or female characters? Day 5 - If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a pic, whether your "muse" or not, what did you do about it? Day 4 - Do you have a "muse" character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the pic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse? Day 3 - For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to draw?
Day 2 - Name the fandoms you've drawn in, and how much you've drawn in that fandom, and if you still draw in it.
Day 1 - How did you first get into drawing fanart, and what was the first fandom you ever drew for? What do you think it was about the fandom that pulled you in?
