CHART BEAT BITS: As this season of "American Idol" reduces its field of contestants to 11, last year's champ achieves a first on the Pop Songs chart. Rising 11-10 with "Live Like We're Dying," Kris Allen becomes the show's first male winner to enter the tally's top 10. He joins previous champs Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jordin Sparks in reaching the chart's top tier. (Current contestant Didi Benami likely introduced many to the melodic "Play With Fire" Tuesday. As a b-side to the No. 9-peaking "The Last Time," the Rolling Stones' original peaked at No. 96 on the Hot 100 in 1965 ...)

'Idol' winner Allen at Fiesta Texas
By Jeanne Jakle - Express-News Current “American Idol” champ Kris Allen predicts this season will end the show's present guy streak.

“It's going to be a woman,” Allen said of who'll take the next “Idol” crown, suggesting that the female talent looks particularly good this year.

As for which contestant on Season 9 of the Fox TV juggernaut is his favorite, Allen said he couldn't say yet. Now that the Top 12 have been picked, however, he said he'd be watching more closely.

Allen, an Arkansas native who has relocated with his wife to Los Angeles since he shocked audiences by winning “Idol” over odds-on favorite Adam Lambert, spoke in a recent phone chat about the show's judges, his upcoming good will trip to Rwanda and his first visit to San Antonio.

He'll perform at 6 p.m. Friday as part of a double bill with pop rock band OneRepublic in Lone Star Lil's Ampitheater at Six Flags Fiesta Texas.

Allen wasn't sure of every song he'd be singing; one, however, would definitely be included in his set: the hit single “Live Like You're Dying.”

“It just went platinum,” he said proudly.

“Dying” is the signature song from his first album, “Kris Allen,” which debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 when it was released late last year.

Talking to the “Idol” star, you'd never guess he was the winner of the biggest talent competition on TV. Laid back and low-key through most of the call, he did perk up when asked about the current “Idol” judges. He said Kara DioGuardi was really coming along great and he loved Ellen DeGeneres, in particular, because she's “so witty” and “such a nice person.”

What's coming up for Allen? Lots of live show dates across the country, he said, and more charity work overseas.

Audiences saw scenes from his trip to Haiti with the United Nations Foundation on an “American Idol” show last month. He performed a very heartfelt version of “Let It Be” in an effort to raise needed funds as well as further awareness of the country's continuing troubles after the recent earthquake.

“It was really sad to see all the devastation,” he said of his trip. “But the people also are really hopeful. So many people have done such amazing things. I'm so glad I could help out by performing on Idol.”

Later this month, Allen will travel to Rwanda. He said he'd be touring with Tom's Shoes, which will be distributing thousands of pairs of free shoes to people in need in the country.
