How To Make Authority Figures Look Foolish

Nov 23, 2009 18:27

News from Massachusetts came to me today: a high school principal banned the use of the word "meep."

Wow. If you wanted to make yourself look like Edward Rooney, that's pretty close to the top of the list. Although the research didn't entirely bear this out, the original article gives such a strong impression of a paranoid, autocratic administrator and kids resisting with beautiful, inspired nonsense. That's about the best I'd hope for from high-school kids: protesting the inevitable bureaucratic overreaches with the power of Dada. They attracted national attention, so that's overall positive. Despite mixed reviews, it's probably about time for me to read Cory Doctorow's Little Brother, which deals with similar themes of youthful resistance.
