need win 98 OS help NOW!!!!

Ok - I admit - I SCREWED UP!!

I tried to help my husband fix his computer, his OS was going wonky and was shutting down for no apparent reason.

Both of our computers 'fell off a truck', and they have been worked on by a hardware engineer. So now they are as ramped up as much as possible.
He gave us each a CD - 'broken' Win98 SE disk. Which is about as useful as a coffee coaster. It is 'broken' because when we go to change something in the system it asks for the CD - and when we put it in the system says "CD drive not ready Retry?" then it says "Please insert Win 98SE disk and hit enter".

I figured that if I move all the non-OS files to his D drive I would reinstall the new OS - overwriting the old OS.

Good thought - bad result.

Now the system is looking for a startup disk. I have a very very old one for my original system (back in 98), and it asks if I want to use the disk only, use CD-Rom support, No CD support.
I choose Use CD support, it runs a few checks and then sits there on the A:\
doing nothing.. What did I do???!!!!

I have a 'new' Win98SE CD - but don't know if it is better than our old ones. gggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrr

How do I fix it...??????????????

I am a computer programmer with a fair knowledge of DOS, Cobol, and a half a$$ understanding of HTML.

HELP!!

PLEASE!!!! don't say take it to a repair shop - the local place will charge $65 an hour just to take the cover off, let along do anything, and because it is a Win98 it is considered an antique and they won't even let it in the store.
And I am not thinking of the per hour cost....
