The
SSHG Exchange reveals are up!
Which means I can now thank
a_war_goddess for my lovely gift fic
The Dark Rose. Thank you again; it was a wonderful gift and I enjoyed it very much.
It also means that I can now own up to writing
Turn To Dark for
somigliana - a deliberately open-ended possibly-dystopian mystery science-fiction fic that seemed to generate a large number of comments which included the word "disappointed". :P And that I can thank my awesome betas,
ayerf and
juno_magic, for the hand-holding, reading, betaing and helping to make it better. So, thank you!
Writing that fic was a brand new experience in many ways. New genre. New style. Longer than anything I'd written before. I didn't actually set out to be obnoxious about the lack of resolution - and yes, I admit there was a lack of resolution - but... that was that story. And there was no way that story could have been resolved, all ends neatly tied up, in that fic. Instead, when I'd written the last words, I just realised that there wasn't a single word I could add to that story.
Is it crying out for a sequel? Oh yes. And for a while in the summer I seriously considered it. (It may not have looked like that from the fic, but I did actually have answers, in my head, for all those unsolved questions.) But then things got busy and... Well, it's not going to happen. Not only because I'm done with SSHG (most likely), but because I managed to forget what that plot was that I had in mind for it. And also, it would have been / would have to be a very, very, very different story, and I don't know if I could do it justice.
It really was a terrific experience, though, and in many ways, I think it's my best piece of writing to date. I'm painfully aware of the many problems it had, both with the writing and with the content, but it was the best I could do, and if I'm not going to write more SSHG, then I'm pretty glad I ended with that.
Oh yeah, and the title... As has been my habit in recent years - when I get stuck for a title, I turn to the Rolling Stones. In this case, Turn to dark is a tiny little snippet from the lyrics of 2000 Light Years From Home.
Also, I have to admit I've read very little of this round of the Exchange. I hope that I will have the chance to catch up eventually - there are more than a few stories I'd really like to read.
