Avril's new album helped launch songwriter Chantal
WINNIPEG -- When Avril Lavigne picked up five Juno nominations a couple of weeks ago, another name deserved to be in brackets right next to hers. Chantal Kreviazuk co-wrote six songs on Under My Skin, giving the former Winnipegger every right to share some of Lavigne's glory.
"At the end of the day, I don't think any number of Juno nominations could even equate to the amount of joy and freedom and happiness that working on that album has brought me," said the 31-year-old singer-songwriter, speaking over the phone from the Los Angeles home where she and husband Raine Maida have become a sought-after songwriter-producer team.
Kreviazuk, who is pregnant with the couple's second child, is pumped about the songwriting opportunities that have flowed from her collaboration with Lavigne, whose current record has sold more than five million copies and produced several smash-hit singles.
After finishing her work with Lavigne, Kreviazuk picked up gigs writing for singer Gwen Stefani and American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson.
"I wanted to do it because I write so much and you only end up having 10 or 11 songs on one album," she said. "It just didn't make sense to me after a while, particularly when you start having a family."
Kreviazuk and Maida, who wed in 1999, have a one-year-old son, Rowan.
"This has allowed me to sit back a little bit and stay home and not get on as many planes," she said. "My No. 1 passion is definitely recording albums and going on the road and performing - I'm going to do that for quite a long time to come, hopefully - but this is a nice means of letting me have a writing outlet."
As an added bonus, she and Maida, who fronts Our Lady Peace when he's not producing, now have more clout when it comes to their own projects.
"We have far more freedom. We are now the people our (labels) would be calling to work on our records," she said. "Before, if I said, 'I really think Raine should produce my next album,' they would say, 'OK, but we need to humour everyone's ideas first.' Now, I don't need to have those conversations anymore."
Kreviazuk plans to record her fourth album at home before her second child arrives in June. The disc, to be produced by Maida, could be out as early as 2006.
