All Day, All Knight...in White

Aug 28, 2008 05:10

I woke up around 10PM from Bel, one of my frequent roomies, and her babbling about her and her sister squaring off on something - and their mother joining in to side with her sister. She doesn't look depressed but my "regular" roomie joined her for a round of drinking session inside our little private haven. I didn't drink, of course - had some office work to do and think about after the two doze off anyway. During the round, I let them watch The Happening, the movie produced and directed by M.Night Shyamalan, whose name I seem to love spelling with a 'K' for some noble reason, I suppose. Whatever reason my hands have behind that, it is just plain wrong and humiliating. Boo me.

Now that I've made amends for my lack of attention to spelling, I'll proceed with my entry for today now. :P
At work, I watch movies to keep me awake as I do my tasks (Don't get me wrong. I'm still productive at that). Yesterday morning, I picked two movies to watch: Unbreakable, another of M.Night's creations and one I haven't watched before, and Powder, '95's best and one of my most-loved movies ever.
I got excited about Unbreakable because I knew I'd be in for another ride that only viewers can get out of a Shyamalan. And toward the end of the film, the true apex of the story when the signature M.Night twist almost always comes in, I truly understood what The Happening critics were referring to when they gave the said movie a thumbs-down: Shyamalan's magic have always lied strongly in the that M.Night twist I referred to that is toward the end of almost all of his stories, and in The Happening, the strength of the twist was hardly felt, not to mention that the revelation came some time toward the middle of the film. But one brilliant thing Shyamalan did was that he gave his viewers the answer to the dreaded question about why people start falling out of the sky straight out, not in a blaring way but in a quiet and honest way, that made us hesitate a bit as to whether we'd accept that as something plausible or not, which in the end, we, the viewers, had no option but to accept that as such. I enjoyed two films tremendously. For Unbreakable, I'm a little sorry for myself that I didn't get to watch the film earlier (since we have a DVD of that at home). Honestly, I completely ignored the film until I found out that M.Night did it.
And Powder. Oh, Powder, Powder! I'll always be bawling my eyes out every time I'll watch that film. The first time I saw it way back in high school I knew that it would leave a big mark in me, the way Amistad and Pay It Forward left big and scarred marks on me. Powder, though fictional, is the most beautiful man I've ever seen, and the actor who played him is equally beautiful. If you haven't watch that yet, I recommend you give time to watch this movie. It's heartwarming, dramatic, magical. You will not be disappointed. You'll probably find yourself asking questions about yourself, actually, the society we live in, and who and what we are as human beings. Watch it. Now. Go.
Going back to M.Night, as you may know, he will be writing, directing, and producing the animated movie for Avatar: The Last Airbender. My boyfriend only gave me a bit of information about what the cartoon is all about and found it quite intriguing. The movie, as far as I know, is now in its pre-production phase. More about Avatar here.
