The images you see on this page are the work of artist Edwin H Kiefer. Splendid depictions of fashion and glamour which date from 1908 and were published in postcard form for the American market by Bamforth (who had opened their New York office in 1906).
Edwin Kiefer was an interesting man, the son of a doctor, he was an accomplished and versatile artist, an enthusiastic sailor, and a successful businessman. It's not entirely clear if his artistic endeavours were his primary focus but they were certainly his love.
Born in Michigan in 1860 and a citizen of Detroit, Kiefer had travelled to Europe to study art in Berlin and in Paris in the mid 1890's. Kiefer exhibited at the Paris Salon in the late1890s before returning to America in 1898 where, 15 years later, he exhibited in his home city of Detroit.
Edwardian artist postcards depicting the fashion of the era are, quite rightly, very popular with collectors today.
Edwin H Kiefer died in 1931.
