*yawn*
So Scott and I camped out all night for a Wii last night, at a nearby Target in Kearney Mesa. Earlier last night, I called a closer target, and was told that they wouldn't have any, but got a promising tipoff from someone at the Kearney Mesa target, and decided to go with it.
Kotaku claimed that Best Buy was hoarding units so that they could stock every Best Buy in America with an ample supply of units for today. Nobody I've spoken with at any Best Buy knew anything of this, which surprised me, since Kotaku's usually decent for rumor source.
Turns out, we waited at the right Target. People were camped out at the Target in Mira Mesa, only to be told, after 8 hours of waiting, that the store didn't receive a single unit.
We were told by people at the Kearney Mesa target that they would have 30 to 45 units for sale today. They had seven.
9 people were in line by 2am, so it was fortunate that Scott and I arrived before then, at midnight. By 6am, when the manager came out and told us that they only had 7 units, and would be handing out tickets at 7am (they handed them out at 7:40, btw), there were over 30 people in line. Probably 40 more arrived between then and 8am, when the doors were opened. Most stayed even after we relayed the message that only 7 units were available and the tickets had already been handed out.
I'm glad I got one, and I had a good time hanging out with Scott, and some cool people in line, but this whole experience has left a bad taste in my mouth. Someone in line knew someone who had camped out for four days straight in order to get a PS3 near launch. The 63 people who arrived well before opening only to be turned away also disturbed me, I saw a lot of very disappointed mothers and children. Puppy dog eyes and everything.
Nintendo had better live up to the significance they've hoarded to themselves, because this competition is nothing if not bitter and grim, and I've never known Nintendo to be like that.
Ah well. I'm sure 15 minutes of bowling will make me completely forget about it all. Probably why I'm blogging now, instead of getting some much needed sleep. Speaking of which.
