well well well well.
(typing this entry will be interesting, seeing how I have a keyboard in my lap.)
there are two main components of my night last night:
1) my car got broken into.
the story:
my car was parked at austin's house, because he had to borrow it a few days ago. last night (tuesday), I was going to go get it after my 3d class got out at 10.
austin came out of his house at 9:45 and walked to his car, where he discovered my car's brake lights lit up. he thought, "that can't be kristen, she's not out of class yet." so he walked up to the car and saw two guys sitting in it, fiddling with my pioneer radio. he yelled "HEY!!!" at them as loudly as he could, which not only terrified them, but also alerted the neighbors to call 911.
the guy in the driver's seat got up and faced him.... then, he drew a gun on my austin (2).
"give me all your shit," he said. austin backed up towards the house and walkway, then got down on the ground and emptied his pockets. he handed the guy his wallet, keys and cell phone. the man with the gun told austin to stay on the ground. he went back to the car, finished getting my radio out, tried austin's keys in the ignition (which of course didn't work), then him and his assailant leapt into a white suv getaway vehicle being driven by a third man. austin looked up when he heard the footsteps and saw them climb into the car, then zoom down the road.
to get into my car, they had pushed down on the rubber weather sealing of my window, then popped the glass forward and shoved the window down to open the door. they did a small amount of damage prying out the radio. the dumbest thing about it is that they didn't take the faceplate to the radio-- so, essentially, they have a totally useless piece that they can't get any money for. the only thing they got out of the deal was the $40 in austin's wallet (he cancelled all of his cards and cell phone right away). they also fished around in my glove compartment some, but austin caught them so quickly that they didn't even have time to look.
I got a panicked message from austin right at the end of my class. at first, I felt shocked and horrified and sickened and upset- but then, I felt an unsettling amount of familiarity in dealing with shitty situations like this. it was as if I already knew that things were okay, and that it would just end up being another crappy part of life to deal with.
ashley's mom was kind enough to drive me straight to austin's house. the cops arrived soon after I got on the scene. charlie and shaun (austin's roommates) and a neighbor from across the way all described what they saw to the police. there are two conflicting racial reports- austin saw latino, but shaun saw black- and that creates some identification confusion. no one was able to get a plate number from the suv, but the neighbor had narrowed the model of the car down to two possibilities. the police took a report from austin, and got information from me, all while a chase was going on for the suv. a helicopter was trying to trace the car from air. (as far as we know, they have yet to be found.) also, the police found austin's keys in my front seat, so he at least has his keys back from the ordeal.
since the crime had escalated from theft to armed robbery, it went from a bad situation to a worse one. fortunately, the crooks were sloppy assholes with their work, and left dirtyass fingerprints all over the windows. we were told that someone would be coming down to dust for prints, but then the police called the house and said that we'd have to drive down to downtown LA instead. janky? you bet.
so, the two of us, in all our misery, drove downtown at about midnight, and a nice woman spent 20-30 minutes dusting my poor bandit for prints. luckily, she got lots of good sets of prints. she seemed confident that the assailants would be in their system already. I hope to god she's right... fucking with my car is one thing, but pulling a gun on my boyfriend will get yourself murdered in cold blood on my watch.
austin's mom has been really helpful. she's been talking to him via my cell phone, so I'm happy to help be a communication aid. she left me a voicemail earlier expressing her sympathy for the situation, said she was glad that I was all right, and thanked me for being so helpful in austin's time of need.
add into the mix that, as of yesterday, I'm sick as a dog with a horrendous head cold. I'm stuffed up, my throat hurts, I'm sneezing and coughing and sniffling and my ears keep plugging up. needless to say, austin and I didn't sleep too well last night.
he took today off from work, which I think was a wise decision. I took the night off from drawing class, too. we spent today doing errands and working on replacing the stereo in my car... not to mention tending to our souls. I'm his sugar momma for awhile, because I can't believe he risked his life just to protect my car. if I ever needed proof that austin loves me, I sure as hell got it last night.
the least I can do for him right now is support him while he works to get his cards/cell phone/access to his money back.
this weekend is our 2-year anniversary weekend (monday is the actual day). we had already decided to keep it tame this year, since we're both so financially incapable of doing anything like what we did last year (a trip to san diego)... we were maybe going to drive up to santa barbara to visit his dad, or at least go to a fancy dinner, but we'll see. we might have to settle for just good old quality time this year. I don't really care... after last night, the only thing I can focus on is thank god he was not hurt. sure, it sucks having my poor car broken into, but that's beans compared to austin being hurt in body and/or spirit. I thank my lucky stars and god almighty that he protected my beloved in his time of need.
I'm not looking at the situation so much as "shit, crappy stuff always happens, why me, when will it end" as I'm thinking of it as "it could have been SO much worse and thank god it was only what it was."
plus, austin is giving me the old radio he had in his saturn, so I don't even have to worry about replacing the radio. he is truly an angel. he spent this afternoon wiring a radio for me. I kept telling him that he really, really didn't have to do that, but he insisted on being a sweetheart.
so, that's the story. I can't say I plan on driving bandit over here to the house anymore... nope, I think LMU is his official home now. austin and I have plans to get a place after I graduate, and maybe, god willing, we can find a place with a gated parking area? please?
yep. as they said in the downer, depressing, disappointing movie "jarhead": welcome to teh suck.
I feel like crap, and I still have hope that we can have a nice, crime-free weekend. all I can say is: thank god for... god. just....thank you.
austin,
wtf?!,
bandit
