more action than a box full of rabid weasels

there are boys in my apartment. I woke up, looking like hell, opened my door, and there they were. I'm getting used to it, though... I discreetly shut the door and brushed my hair before making another appearance to walk to the bathroom.

that's the extent of today's story.

but yesterday..... whoo!!

first off: the anime symposium at the ucla.
-ucla is HUGE. I mean, it's colossal. I'd never wanna go there, it's just too big. lmu is way better, anyway.
-we got there early, so we had an anime charicature artist draw pictures of us. his name was kaptain kartoon, and he had been on the cover of american splendor the comic book, and he'd been in the animation industry and was giving us advice on getting in to the business.
-the symposium also offers a 10-week lecture series and workshop (for a hefty fee). but, you get a concise manga kit with it, and get taught how to draw by different manga artists who are flown in from japan!! (the creator of pokemon will be teaching the first class.) ashley and I wanna do it really badly. we're gonna see if we can get a group rate.
-some of the key note speakers were: stuart levy, the founder and CEO of tokyopop; shinji shimizu, an animator from toei animation who's worked on dragon ball/z/gt, galaxy express 999, one piece and others; don murphy, film producer for "the extraordinary league of gentlemen," "domu parasyte," and "astro boy"; kimindo kusaka, chairman of the tokyo foundation; and charles hirshhorn, founder and CEO of g4 media (the video game channel).
-we got free gifts!! 3 volumes of tokyopop manga, a booklet about japan, and a trio of one piece keychains!
-it was way cool. there were so many japanese animators there. the japanese speakers all had a translator. it felt so exotic to be sitting there!!

so, it was tremendously exciting. it was like a fantasy, to be in the same room as manga artists and animators. I looked at shimizu-san and imagined that he had probably drawn some of my favorite dbz episodes. I wanted to show him my goku watch and be like, "I love your work!!!"...but, didn't wanna scare him, either. ^^;
I'm hoping I'll get to go to the workshops, or at least the lectures. I'm gonna talk to mom about it today.

when I got back to campus, I was intent on taking a nap. I was exhausted all day, and sitting for 3 hours, despite the exciting atmosphere, was tiresome. but, before I could even shut my eyes, ali IMed to ask me to a movie. she wanted to see underworld, but I said that there was no way I was gonna drag my sleepy ass out to a $10 movie I didn't even wanna see when I could be sleeping at home. I agreed to go permitted we saw another movie- one that had gotten good reviews.

so, we theatre hopped for a while, and ended up at manhattan beach to go see "lost in translation" (my suggestion). we had a lot of time to kill before the movie started, so we went and got bubble tea and ice cream and flipped the seats back in ali's car. we were gonna nap, but it was way too uncomfortable, so we played truth or dare instead. ashley took a dare from ali, and she dared her to get up on top of the car and break dance. she got on the hood, and then went on top of the car, and went all michael jackson on the hood. I laughed until my ribs hurt! but then, we were waiting for her to come climb down, and suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I see something fall off the hood and go blurring past. I looked out the window and ashley was crouched there on the ground. she had JUMPED off the fucking car!!! she got back in and said, "ooh damn, when I landed, all the air came outta my ass!!" we laughed and laughed and laughed, I cried I laughed so hard, and I even laughed about it randomly during the movie. good times!!

our game got a little serious. we all took truths and shared really private information with each other. it was really cool, because it turned into a prep session where we all told each other how cool we were, and we picked ourselves up after a kinda downer conversation. we really bonded.

the movie, though, was not so great. I give it two stars. it's not what the preview cracks it up to be. sure, it's cute, and it's fun to see all the japanese stuff in it, but the movie suffers. sofia coppola is not someone I aspire to be, I tell y'what.

I came home and flopped right into bed. I was so, so tired and my head hurt. I hardly ate anything yesterday, which was probably part of my problem. it was a pleasant sleep... but I made myself get up at a good time so I could get up early tomorrow. I have an appointment tomorrow, and justin, god bless him, is driving me to it.

my stomach growls. can I go out to the kitchen without being stared down by these boys, I wonder? I think it's time to find out.

anime, ali, animation, ashley, friends, films, fun
