booky update

so, i've read some books since i last posted about books in.. december i went back and added urls to the books i've read, too.

    books i read:
  • River of Dancing Gods (Jack L. Chalker) -meh. dunno if i'll ever reread this. it is part of a trilogy, and i have the 3rd book, so i'll hunt up the second and finish them before i decide.
  • Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal (Moore) -HA! loved this.
  • A Dirty Job (Moore) - This was pretty good too. I liked Lamb better, but this was fun cause it mentioned SF things.
  • Little Women - I feel like a jerk for saying I enjoyed the afterword better than the story. The story annoyed me.
  • Mirror Mirror (Maguire) - nice, i like how each fairy tale is a different kind of twist.
  • Lost (Maguire) - technically i listened to this on cd while driving. i hated to get out of the car, but the ending seemed forced somehow.
  • Reread A Game of Thrones (George R Martin)
  • A Clash of Kings (George R Martin)
  • A Storm of Swords (George R Martin) - i love these books. they've raised the bar on what i expect from fantasy books
  • Magic Kingdom for Sale (Terry brooks) - this was fun, but i didn't feel like the characters had to work very hard to succeed. I'm so spoiled by George R Martin.
  • The black Unicorn (Terry brooks) - things felt a bit more earned than the last one.
  • Persuasion (Jane Austen) all the heroines but Lizzie seem like giant wimps to my modern eyes. i wanted to wring her neck a few times.
  • Jhereg (Steven Brust)
  • Yendi (Steven Brust) - i like these books cause they are short and funny. so great for sticking into a bag to pick up when i find myself waiting somewhere.
  • reread books 1-5 of L E Modesitt's Recluce Books. - these books make me unbearably hungry for dried fruit, cheese, and hearty stews. they also make me rant and rave, and yet i am addicted and can't stop reading them. i gave them to a coworker so that i'd have someone to complain about them to.

    Currently Reading
  • A Feast for Crows (George R Martin)
  • kushiel #4
  • recluse book #6
  • The Omnivore's Dilemna - i really love his messages. i hate that i can detect the slant. like, i want to believe everything he says, but i don't feel like every thing has been well defended enough that it would work on anyone intelligent and disbelieving. he undermines the well supported bits by adding in the crazier theories that are what the disbelievers are gonna latch onto.
  • Smoke and Mirrors: The War on Drugs and the Politics of Failure (Dan Baum)
  • the cripple and his talismans (anosh irani)
  • Orlando (Virginia Wolfe)
  • the castle (kafka) (does this even count?! i've been reading this for ~10 years now.. eep.)
Books still on the to read list
  • Slave Ship (Frederik Pohl)
  • Forbidden Knowledge: The Gap Into Vision (Stephen R. Donaldson)
  • Citizen Coors: A Grand Family Saga of Business, Politics, and Beer(Dan Baum)
  • anne rice's beauty books
  • the compass rose (le guin)
  • dress your family in corduroy and denim (sedaris)
  • ham on rye (bukowski)
  • motherless brooklyn (lethem)
  • the fortress of solitude (lethem)
  • son of a witch (maguire)
  • ... the list goes on..
