Man with Guns

Oct 16, 2007 14:04

Well it was an interesting day today. I'm not going to go into most of it aside from the fact that, the lovely man with guns, firing off shots happened right up the street from where I work. We didn't hear anything aside from the reports on the radio but yaeh it was interesting.

Man with Guns, Charged with Reckless Endangerment, at least he didn't actually shoot anyone I suppose. Why the hell would you? And apparently he was a registered IU student.

2:10 p.m. update

• The IU's registrar's office has Jesse Sneed's hometown listed as Wood River, Ill. He is registered as a law student at Indiana University.

• Police kept media away from a car in the apartment complex parking lot. The car was a red 2-door Chevy Cavalier with Illinois plates; there were two other Illinois license plates in the back seat of the car, along with what appeared to be a law textbook. The car also appeared to have a broken window.

1:51 p.m. update

Jesse Sneed, 27, 1324 West Arch Haven, charged with criminal recklessness with a weapon.

Sneed is listed on Indiana University's Web site as an enrolled student.

News briefing in one hour -- at 1:30 p.m.

11:41 a.m. update

Police say they found two weapons, an AR-15 and AK-47 assault rifles, on the roof of the apartment building.

Police think the shooter may have put them on the roof and attempted to leave the complex.

Police arrested a man trying to leave the complex around 8:30 a.m., and have not released any other information on him.

A news briefing is scheduled for 1 p.m. today.

11:25 a.m. update

Police are now saying that the person arrested at around 8:30 a.m. today is thought to be the gunman.

He was unarmed when they found him, police said; they also said weapons were found on the roof of the apartment building.

This story will be updated.

11:20 a.m. update

According to preliminary police scanner reports, the situation at the apartment building is "secure." Authorities plan to hold a news briefing in about 10 or 15 minutes.

11:08 a.m. update

Authorities say they will hold a news briefing in about 10 or 15 minutes.

10:34 a.m. update

Police at the scene say they are still trying to determine how many people may be in the apartment unit along Arch Haven Road and whether a man arrested earlier is involved in the case at all.

Witnesses said they observed a man being arrested near the area earlier this morning, but it is not clear if the arrest is related to the shooting, and police say the gunman is not in custody.

Reports from IU and Monroe County Community School Corp. officials that the gunman had been arrested are incorrect.

At 10:15 today, John Mehalechko said his daughter lives in one of the units in the two-unit complex on Arch Haven Road. Her unit is in a building alongside the building where the shooter was seen.

When she heard about the shooting, she fled her apartment, and crawled along the hallway to her brother's apartment, where she said she felt safer because it is farther away from the shooter's balcony, he said.

"It's kind of scary, Mehalechko said. "She's inside and she's OK."

There have been no reports of any injuries, and no further shots fired for at least two hours, other witnesses on the scene said.

Police are working on evacuating the units in the building. At this hour there are about 25 to 30 officers on the scene, including officers from Bloomington police, IU police, Monroe County Sheriff's Department, and the Critical Incident Response Team.

10:15 a.m. update

Gale Hill, principal at Tri-North Middle School, said the school is back in lockdown. She said they were misinformed about the suspect being in custody.

9:51 a.m. update

Police say there will be no formal news conference. They will inform the media on progress as it happens. They said they weren't sure about whether the apartment building had been evacuated.

9:32 a.m. update

• Bloomington Police Department Capt. Joe Qualters told H-T reporter Marci Creps that police believe the suspect is using an assault rifle. Because an assault rifle can hit a target from great distances, police are keeping people away from the scene as an extra precaution.

• Gale Hill, principal at Tri-North Middle School, said the school was locked down at 8:30 a.m. and not unlocked until around 8:50 a.m.

“We didn’t feel we were in jeopardy, but we are required to run through a manmade disaster drill every semester, so we thought this was a good opportunity to that,” Hill said. “We had a code yellow, which means the doors were locked but the teachers were continuing to teach in their classrooms.”

9:08 a.m. update

Bloomington Police Department Capt. Joe Qualters says police are trying to get communication with the man still in the apartment building; police are sending a telephone up to the apartment.

The apartment building is at the 1300 block of West Arch Haven on Bloomington's west side; the initial call came in after 7 a.m.

9:01 a.m. update

A man fired shots from an apartment building balcony this morning, according to police.

Sgt. Faron Lake told H-T reporter Marci Creps that a man fired shots from the balcony of an apartment building behind the BW3 restaurant on Second Street this morning. Lake said the man shot a rifle numerous times, but did not hit anyone that police are aware of, then went back inside.

Police believe the man is back inside the apartment at this time, and has not come back out.

Bloomington police's Critical Incident Response Team is on the scene, staging next to Stonebelt on Adams Street.

Dave Burnworth, senior director of clinical operations at IMA, said Internal Medicine Associates’ Landmark Family Practice and Landmark Medical Center were both locked down at 7:45 a.m.

“No patients or doctors can leave the building until we get the OK from the police,” he said. “Everyone seems to be fine. They know they are secure if they stay inside the building.”

8:43 a.m. update

Bloomington Police are at the scene of the incident near Second Street at this hour.

Preliminary reports from police indicate a man with a rifle came out of an apartment building on Adams Street, between Patterson and Second Streets, and fired shots.

Police did not say who the man is, or why shots were fired.

The area is sealed off, including Second near Landmark and Patterson and Adams Street.

A news briefing is expected in about a half hour.

This story will be updated as information becomes available. *poofs*
