three little words

Why do people in love stop saying "I love you"? What happens? I don't understand how those three little words came to mean so much, came to influence one's attitude or self esteem. The syllables of that sentence almost tickle your ears and push some button inside you that makes you smile, and blush, and giggle like a little kid that just got licked in the face by the cutest puppy known to man. It is such a simple pleasure, an affirmation if you will. Why would someone who loves you just stop saying it? Do they just forget? For awhile you just say it every time you feel that something, that strange indescribable flutter that happens sometimes.....out of the blue. Then of course they say it back, and somewhere inside you amidst the fluttering and blushing you hope, and you know it's silly to even think about.... that is wasn't said out of obligation. A part of you (that horrible, insecure, fretful part) wonders.......if you stopped saying it first, how long would it be until you heard those words again?
