A few years ago Ron Howard Unleashed his film "The Grinch" on the world. being a huge fan of the book and classic Chuck Jones animated special, I went to see this movie on opening day. I was sickened by it. It was mean spirited, ugly, and NOT the Grinch.
Theodore Geisel's story, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", was about a mean old Grinch who lived just outside of Whoville. He had segregated himself by choice. The Whos were loving, accepting creatures who loved Christmas, and bubbled over with the Christmas spirit. tHEY understood that Christmas was not about presents, but something more. At the end they accepted the Grinch with open arms.
Ron Howard's sickening version ruined Geisel's wonderful story. First off, it didn't rhyme. The whole film should have rhymed from beginning to end. It would have been hard, very true, but rhyming is a staple of Geisel's work. To not make it rhyme was lazy filmmaking. Then, Ron Howard turned the Whos into despicable little hate-mongers who ran the Grinch out of town as a child simply because he was different. These were not the loving Whos we saw in Geisel's version. To add insult to injury at the end when the Whos were supposed to join hand in hand and sing even though they had no presents they DIDN'T. They complained. They ran and shouted and cryed because their presents were gone, until one Who (Little Cindy Lou Who who was older then 2 in the movie!!!) showed them the error of their ways. In short: Ron Howard ruined a classic Christmas story.
So why did I rant about Howard's "Grinch"?? Because I just saw "Elf". It is such an incredible film. "Elf is as good as "The Grinch" was bad. This was a film that made me smile from ear to ear from beginning to end. It was funny, it was sweet, and it was irresistible. Anyone who hates this movie needs joy in their lives, because this movie is beautiful on so many levels. This was a movie that made me laugh, made my tear up, and made me wish that Missy was there so that I could hug her.
"Elf" is simply put, one of the greatest Christmas movie's I've ever seen. It's a laugh riot from start to finish, and a sweet story, too. Not a sickeningly sweet movie either. The kind that is just right.
SEE THIS MOVIE. Whatever you do, make it a point to see it. It's a wonderful film. I can't praise it enough.
Now someone please make Ron Howard watch it, so he can see how a good Christmas movie is supposed to be made.
