second childhood

I was thinking about My Family and Other Animals again, which one of my profs lent me last semester. Basically it's an autobiographical account of a kid and his wacky family who just up and leave England one day for Corfu, Greece and live there for 4 years.

One day, when I'm 35 (or maybe 40, if I do go to grad school) and married with kids, I want to do the same thing. I want to take a gap year and travel the world, spending a month in 12 cities, or maybe 2 months in 6, or something along those lines. And the kids will... wait. If I raise them in Singapore they can't be homeschooled. And they'll be a year behind. And they might not want to leave their friends behind. And we might all drive each other crazy talking to no one but ourselves for a year.

Guh. Reality is seriously such a pain.

reality bites, vie, resolutions.
